City elder of Berlin

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

City Elder of Berlin is an honorary designation that was awarded by the then Berlin magistrate until 1950 . The Berlin Senate has taken on this task since 1951 .

The honorary designation goes back to the Stein and Hardenberg town reform of 1808. It should therefore be awarded to personalities who have reached the age of 65 and who have earned services in positions that they held for at least 20 years in municipal elective or honorary positions in Berlin.

The title was first awarded in 1820. The memorial book of the elders of the city of Berlin is kept in the Landesarchiv Berlin . Anna Nemitz was the first woman to be honored in 1953.

The conditions under which this honorary title is awarded were re-regulated on April 28, 1953 by a directive of the House of Representatives . Since then, German residents of Berlin who have reached the age of 60 have been able to receive this title if they have worked as a Berlin election officer or in an honorary position in the Berlin administration for at least 20 years. In addition, there should not be more than 40 living Berlin city elders.

No titles were awarded between 1931 and 1947. The first award of the honorary title after the Second World War took place in 1948 to the district mayor of Spandau, Gottlob Münsinger . From 1949 to 1990 the title was only awarded in West Berlin ; the East Berlin magistrate did not appoint city elders.

The appointment as city elder is associated with certain privileges. They are invited to celebrations by the Senate as guests of honor and receive free annual tickets for the Berlin transport company and the Berlin Official Gazette . By March 2014, 250 people had received the title of city elders.
