Richard Draemert
Richard Draemert (born June 24, 1880 in Berlin ; † August 5, 1957 there ) was a Berlin politician ( SPD ).
Life
Richard Draemert came from the simplest of backgrounds, first became a forwarding agent and joined the union in 1903. Immediately after the First World War , he joined the SPD and became its first district chairman in Berlin-Zehlendorf .
From 1921 to 1933 he was a member of the Berlin city council and at the same time a district councilor in Zehlendorf. As a city councilor, he was a member of the supervisory board of the Berlin Exhibition Company and the Berlin Airport Company. The extension of the underground to the Krumme Lanke underground station and the construction of the Onkel Tom settlement are largely attributed to Draemert's efforts.
As a publishing clerk, he rose to managerial positions and was the sole managing director of the weekly newspaper Die Welt am Montag , until it was banned in March 1933 as the last social democratic newspaper.
As early as 1933, Draemert was taken into protective custody in Plötzensee prison . From 1934 he then ran an ice cream parlor at the Krumme Lanke underground station and from 1940 worked for degewo , whose commercial director he became after the war.
In 1944 he was arrested again and only barely survived the Sachsenhausen concentration camp . From 1946 to 1954 Draemert was again a member of the Zehlendorf district council assembly .
Honors
On his 75th birthday he was honored with the honorary title of City Elder of Berlin .
In 2007, the Steglitz-Zehlendorf district council decided to include Draemert in the list of those streets or squares after which they should be named. In the meantime, the place in front of the Onkel Toms Hütte underground station was considered to be named.
His grave in the Dahlem cemetery is an honorary grave of the State of Berlin.
On December 20, 2019 , a memorial plaque was unveiled in front of the Onkel Toms Hütte underground station in Berlin-Zehlendorf , Onkel-Tom-Straße 99 .
