Ella Barowsky (born January 11, 1912 in Charlottenburg ; † September 25, 2007 in Berlin ) was a German politician of the LDP / FDP .

Life and work

Barowsky studied economics at the Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität zu Berlin in the early 1930s . She then worked from 1934 to 1938 as an archivist at the housing construction company Treubau AF for Berlin. In 1943 she received her doctorate in Dr. phil. In the post-war period she was a rubble woman . In 1950 she was hospitalized for several months because of typhus .

From 1964 to 1975 Barowsky was director of the Lette Club . As long-time chairwoman and honorary chairwoman of the German Association of Women Academics Berlin eV, she promoted equality for women in education. She was also involved in the Society for Christian-Jewish Cooperation in Berlin , of which she was one of the three chairmen from 1974 to 1992, in the German-Israeli Society and in the Association of Friends of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem , where she was a member of the board . Most recently she was honorary chairwoman of the Berlin Society for Christian-Jewish Cooperation.

After the Berlin banking scandal , Barowsky was one of the initiators of the referendum for a new election to the House of Representatives.

Ella Barowsky took part in the founding of the LDP in Berlin in 1945, whose West Berlin local associations became the Berlin State Association of the FDP after the city split . Within the West Berlin FDP she belonged to the left-liberal wing around Hans Reif . From 1946 to 1948 she was a member of the city ​​council of Berlin , where she supported the work of the women's committee. Then she sat in the Berlin House of Representatives , where she was temporarily deputy chairman of the FDP parliamentary group . From 1951 to 1955 she was District Mayor of Berlin-Schöneberg and later City Councilor for Finance in Berlin-Wilmersdorf . In the 1950s she was part of the extended federal executive committee of the FDP and was deputy state chairman of the Berlin FDP. Her work focused on social and financial policy. She was honorary chairman of the Berlin FDP.
