Erich Wendland

Erich Wendland (born November 11, 1888 in Berlin ; † October 7, 1950 there ) was a book printer and in 1945 was appointed second mayor of the Berlin district of Schöneberg . He was elected mayor of that district from December 20, 1945 until his death.

Life

Erich Wendland learned the trade of book printer. During the Weimar period he was involved in the Association of German Book Printers and was a member and functionary of the SPD . In 1933 he was arrested, ill-treated and banned from practicing his profession . He had to do forced labor in a salt mine until 1945 .

Shortly before the end of the war he came back to Berlin. Here he was appointed second mayor of Schöneberg on May 4, 1945 by the Soviet headquarters . On July 20, 1945, the American military administration appointed him 1st mayor. The first district assembly on December 20, 1945 then elected him to this office. Erich Wendland devoted himself to the reconstruction of the district administration and the re-establishment of the SPD in Schöneberg. He held the office of district mayor until his death.

Honors

Honor grave

He was given an honorary grave by the city of Berlin in the Schöneberg II cemetery in Eythstrasse. A path in the south of Schöneberg bears the name Wendlandzeile after him .
