Alfred Gleitze

Alfred Gleitze (born January 1, 1934 in Berlin ; † August 27, 2004 there ) was a German politician who held various positions in Berlin's local government in the course of his professional life.

Gleitze attended elementary and high school in Berlin; first in Treptow in the east, from 1949 after his family moved to the western part in Steglitz . He later studied law and economics at the Free University of Berlin and the Albert-Ludwigs-University in Freiburg im Breisgau .

He began his political engagement with the Socialist Youth of Germany (SJD), the youth association of the SPD , where he played in the cabaret Die Zivilisten . His career as a functionary also began here; he was first chairman of the district of Steglitz and from 1965 to 1969 chairman of the Berlin regional association. In this role, he carried out tent camps and trips to memorial sites in former extermination camps . He managed to get young people from Czechoslovakia to take part in trips to western summer camps .

Gleitze joined the SPD in 1954 and ÖTV in 1959. From 1959 to 1965 he was head of the press office of the Berlin-Kreuzberg district office ; he described this period as formative for his conception of politics. In his further political career he was District Councilor for Youth and Sports in Berlin-Schöneberg (1969–1971), District Mayor of Schöneberg (1971–1975) and Councilor for Finance and Economics in Schöneberg (1975–1985) and Deputy District Mayor (1975–1981) ). He was also a district councilor in the district council assembly of Schöneberg from 1963 to 1969 and 1985 to 2001 , from 1965 to 1969 and 1989 to 1995 as its head.

On July 7, 2004, he was awarded the title of City Elder for his work . His daughter Angelika Schöttler has been the district mayor of Tempelhof-Schöneberg since 2011.
