Emil Berndt

Emil Berndt (born January 16, 1874 in Vietzig , Usedom-Wollin district in Pomerania ; † August 28, 1954 in Wiesbaden ) was a German lawyer and politician ( DNVP ).

Life and work

After graduating from primary school in Vietzig, Berndt attended the Realprogymnasium in Wollin , then switched to the Schiller Realgymnasium in Stettin and in 1893 passed the Abitur at the Stettiner Stadtgymnasium. He then began studying medicine at the Julius Maximilians University of Würzburg , which he ended prematurely after only one semester. He then changed faculties and in 1894 began studying law and political science at the universities of Würzburg and Gießen , which he completed in 1896 with the first state examination and in 1900 with the second state examination. He was then appointed court assessor and initially worked for a lawyer in Mainz . He later worked as a deputy magistrate in Alzey , Gernsheim and Mainz .

In 1893 he became a member of the Cimbria Würzburg fraternity and in 1894 a member of the Alemannia Gießen fraternity .

Berndt, who had previously done military service with the 2nd mounted battery of the Bavarian Field Artillery Regiment No. 5 in Landau , took part in the First World War as a soldier from August 1914 , first as a lieutenant, then as captain and battery chief. In April 1916 he was recalled by the Berlin magistrate to take over part of the food supply .

Political party

Berndt joined the DNVP after the November Revolution and was elected to the party's Berlin state executive in October 1919. In addition, since it was founded in February 1920, he was the first chairman of the German National Civil Service, subsequently its honorary chairman.

MP

In the Reichstag election in June 1920 , Berndt was elected to the German Reichstag , of which he was a member until November 1933. In parliament he represented the constituencies of Berlin and Potsdam II. From 1924 to 1932 he was deputy chairman of the DNVP parliamentary group in the Reichstag.

Public offices

Berndt was an alderman in Mainz from 1907 to 1912 and a city councilor in Berlin from May 1912 to 1920. He has been the district mayor of Schöneberg since 1921 .
