Jiří Třanovský (Slovak Juraj Tranovský , Latinized Georgius Tranoscius , born March 27, 1592 in Teschen , † May 29, 1637 in Liptovský Mikuláš ) was a Czech hymn poet and composer .

Life

He was the son of Valentin Třanovský from Třanovice from Třanovice and his wife Hedvika Zentkovská from Smilovice . Třanovský attended schools in Guben and Kolberg from 1603 . In 1607 he began studying philosophy and theology at the University of Wittenberg . He worked as a teacher from 1611 a. a. at the St. Niklas Latin School on the Lesser Town in Prague and in 1615 became pastor in Valašské Meziříčí . In 1622 he fled to Silesia from the Counter Reformation . In 1625 he was chaplain in Oravský Podzámok and in 1631 pastor in Liptovský Mikuláš in Slovakia.

In 1620 he translated the Augsburg Confession into Czech, published three volumes with Latin odes ( Odarum Sacrarum sive Hymnorum Libri III , 1629 ), the Czech prayer book Phiala odoramentorum ( 1635 ) and the Czech hymn book Cithara Sanctorum. Luthera wſſecky z Nnemecké reči do naſſi Slowanſké Preložené ( 1636 ) with over four hundred songs, of which he had composed around one hundred and fifty himself.

Commemoration

The May 29 is the calendar of the Lutheran Evangelical Church in America Třanovskýs Remembrance Day.

In 1946, a memorial plaque for Třanovský was placed on the Lesser Town Square in Prague. There are monuments in Třanovice , Teschen and Litovský Mikuláš.
