Louise Schroeder Medal
The Louise Schroeder Medal is awarded annually by the State of Berlin to a personality “who takes the political and personal legacy of Louise Schroeder into account in an excellent way and who makes a special contribution to democracy, peace, social justice and the equality of women and Men ”. So far, it has always been awarded to women and once to a women's policy editorial team at the RBB .
The Louise Schroeder Medal has been awarded by the Berlin Senate since 1998 . In 2003, at the request of Parliament, the governing mayor handed over the foundation law to the House of Representatives, after repeated partisan disputes. In 2001, the awarding of the medal to the former Social Democratic Minister of Social Affairs, Regine Hildebrandt, failed due to the veto of the CDU parliamentary group, and in 2002 the CDU politician Hanna-Renate Laurien returned the medal to Daniela Dahn in protest against the award .
The medal is presented by the President of the Berlin House of Representatives around April 2nd, the birthday of Louise Schroeder . It is bronze and shows a portrait of Louise Schroeder on the obverse. On the back there is a shortened version of the saying:
"If I was able to fulfill a special task as a woman, it was to bring people closer to one another, to strengthen their aversion to the dictatorship and to help them as far as possible."
