Harry Liehr

Harry Liehr (born May 15, 1927 in Berlin ) is a former German SPD politician . From 1971 to 1975 he was Senator for Labor and Social Affairs in Berlin, then until 1976 Senator for Transport and Companies.

Life

After three years of professional training and skilled labor as well as studying in England ( Fircroft College ) and USA ( Harvard University ), Harry Liehr became head of the youth, professional training and crafts department at DGB- Berlin. After retiring from active politics, he switched to the private sector . He became the general representative of a group of companies in the social sector, later of a stock corporation, the trust company. He was also a member of the Social Economy Committee at the Berlin Chamber of Commerce for twelve years . In addition to his professional and political activities, he worked in various honorary positions. In 1964 he was made an honorary citizen of Atlantic City (New Jersey) and Iowa .

Political offices

Harry Liehr has been a member of the SPD since 1949. In 1958 he became a member of the Berlin House of Representatives . There he was a member of the parliamentary committee and chairman of the parliamentary youth committee. In 1962 he became a member of the German Bundestag . There he was initially youth policy, then labor market and social policy spokesman for the SPD parliamentary group.

From 1971 to 1975 he took on the post of Senator for Labor and Social Affairs in his hometown and was also a representative of Berlin in the Federal Council . From 1975 he became Senator for Transport and Companies, in which he was also responsible for the ten own companies of the State of Berlin, with over 20,000 employees. After examining a past personnel scandal at KPM's own company in the previous legislative period , in which others were responsible, he resigned as senator in 1976.

Until 1977 he was chairman of the supervisory board of the Berlin airport company . The implementation of the "airport move " from Tempelhof to Tegel was prepared and carried out under his leadership . By 1979 he was again a member of the Berlin House of Representatives. There he was a member of the Economic Committee.

In addition to his parliamentary work, he was Willy Brandt's companion for over 20 years , beginning under his chairmanship in the state executive committee of the SPD.
