Positions

In numerous essays and publications, Flierl complained about the disappearance of buildings that were built in the GDR. He is often invited in discussions as a counterpart to Hans Stimmann . Hans Stimmann is considered a supporter of historical reconstructions.

In particular, the topics of architecture of national traditions , Karl-Marx-Allee , Hermann Henselmann and the creation of the socialist city crown for Berlin, which was later realized in the form of the Berlin TV tower , are among the main topics of his publications.

Flierl campaigned for its preservation in the debate about the demolition of the Palace of the Republic . As the only member of the Expert Commission on Historic Center Berlin, he gave a minority vote against the new palace. The Palast der Republik is not only an important part of the architectural history of the GDR, but also represents a further development of the Volkshaus Karl Friedrich Schinkel . Flierl welcomed the decision of the federal government to select the design by Franco Stella . Flierl also supported the competition participant Hans Kollhoff's idea of building a supplementary extension on the east side of the facade that would make it possible to use the basement.
