Franco Stella

Franco Stella (born April 24, 1943 in Thiene , Vicenza Province ) is an Italian architect . Stella gained greater international fame in 2008 when she won the competition for the reconstruction of the Berlin City Palace .

Life

Francesco Stella studied at the IUAV architecture school in Venice until 1968 . In the early 1970s he took part in the teaching and research activities of the Gruppo Architettura under the direction of Carlo Aymonino . In 1973 he became a lecturer in architecture design at the IUAV. Since 1990 he has been Professor of Architectural Design at the Faculty of Architecture at the University of Genoa . He runs a small architectural office in Vicenza with around five to eight employees. Stella sees herself as a representative of classic-modern rationalism in a tradition that extends from Schinkel to Mies van der Rohe . His concern is to "continue building historical buildings".

In 1991 there was a larger exhibition of works by the architect.

On November 28, 2008, he won the architectural competition for the planning of the Humboldt Forum in Berlin with the reconstructed facades of the Berlin City Palace. In the preparation and planned implementation, Stella works with the Hilmer & Sattler office and with the Gerkan, Marg and Partner office , with whom appropriate agreements have been made. Stella had previously participated in the competitions for the Federal Chancellery and the Foreign Office and was on the jury of the urban development competition for the design of the Spree island .

In 2015, his hometown awarded him the Thiene Prize.

Ambiguity in the context of the reconstruction of the Berlin Palace

When it came to the tender for the architectural design of the Humboldt Forum, it was not clear whether Franco Stella's win was legitimate. One of the conditions was that at least three fully trained architects were actively employed in their own office over a longer period of time. The Bundeskartellamt declared the contract null and void due to a lack of evidence. These legal problems led to massive delays in construction planning. On December 2, 2009, the Düsseldorf Higher Regional Court declared the tender win to be legally binding. Although there were formal deficiencies, the court did not assume that the contracts were invalid. Documents presented in 2011 and 2014 show that Stella did not meet the formal requirements.
