In addition to topics from architecture in the German Democratic Republic , topics from other countries and from the time before the GDR were dealt with.

The German Building Academy , founded in East Berlin in 1951, set it up as the official building magazine in 1952. In addition to the Bauakademie, the editors were also the Association of German Architects . In the title of the magazine in 1974, as almost everywhere, the term GDR was used instead of German . The magazine was first published by Henschel-Verlag in Berlin, later by VEB Verlag für Bauwesen until it was discontinued in 1990 .
