Sabine Bergmann-Pohl (née Schulz ; born April 20, 1946 in Eisenach ) is a German doctor and former politician ( CDU ). From April to October 1990 she was a member and president of the freely elected People's Chamber , from 1990 to 1991 Federal Minister for Special Tasks and from 1991 to 1998 Parliamentary State Secretary at the Federal Minister of Health . From 1990 to 2002 she was a member of the German Bundestag .

Work and private life

After confirmation in 1961 and high school graduation in 1964, Bergmann-Pohl was initially not admitted to the course and therefore completed a two-year internship at the Institute for Forensic Medicine at Humboldt University in Berlin . In 1966 she was allowed to start studying medicine , which she completed in 1972 with a degree in medicine. She has been a specialist in lung diseases since 1979 . 1980 doctorate it to the Dr. med. From 1980 to 1985 she was Medical Director of the Polyclinic Department for Lung Diseases and Tuberculosis in Berlin-Friedrichshain . Bergmann-Pohl has been the patron of the General Disabled People's Association in Germany, ABiD, since 1990, and she was President of the Berlin Red Cross from 2003 to 2012 . In recognition of her special services to the Berlin Red Cross, Bergmann-Pohl was appointed honorary president of the DRK regional association. She has been a member of the Presidium of the International Federation since 2003 and has been Vice President there since 2007. Since 2012 she has been one of the city ​​elders of Berlin . She has been chairwoman of the award jury for the Eberhard Diepgen Prize since 2018 .

On November 9, 2015, she received the German Society's Prize for Services to German and European Understanding on behalf of the first freely elected People's Chamber of the former GDR .

Sabine Bergmann-Pohl is married and has two children from her first marriage.

Political activity

In 1981 Bergmann-Pohl joined the CDU , one of the GDR block parties . In 1987 she became a member of the East Berlin District Board.

In the first free election of the People's Chamber on March 18, 1990 , she moved into the People's Chamber as a member of the CDU and was elected President on April 5. Due to the new article 75a of the constitution of the GDR passed on the same day , she also exercised the powers of the previous chairman of the State Council and was therefore the last head of state of the GDR until October 2, 1990.

With German reunification , she became a member of the German Bundestag on October 3, 1990 . In the federal elections in 1990 , 1994 and 1998 she was elected to parliament via the Berlin CDU state list and was a member of this until the end of the 14th electoral period on October 17, 2002.

From October 3, 1990 to January 18, 1991 Bergmann-Pohl served as Federal Minister for Special Tasks , then until October 26, 1998 as Parliamentary State Secretary at the Federal Minister of Health.

From 1990 to 1992 she was a member of the CDU Presidium.
