Gerhard Stoltenberg (born September 29, 1928 in Kiel ; † November 23, 2001 in Bonn-Bad Godesberg ) was a German historian and politician ( CDU ). He was Federal Minister for Scientific Research from 1965 to 1969 , Prime Minister of Schleswig-Holstein from 1971 to 1982 , Federal Minister of Finance from 1982 to 1989 and Federal Minister of Defense from 1989 to 1992 .

Life and work

In 1944 Stoltenberg was drafted into the Navy as a naval helper . Participation in the war and imprisonment followed . After that, he was in 1949 at the Theodor Mommsen-School in Bad Oldesloe the High School and began studying history , sociology and philosophy at the University of Kiel . Stoltenberg was there in 1954 with the dissertation The German Reichstag 1871–1873. A contribution to the history of German parliamentarism to the Dr. phil. PhD. He then worked in Kiel as a research assistant to Michael Freund at the seminar for science and the history of politics. Through this activity, Gerhard Stoltenberg was a colleague of Jochen Steffen , his later political opponent. After completing his habilitation at the University of Kiel with his thesis Political Currents in the Schleswig-Holstein Rural People 1918–1933. A contribution to the formation of political opinion in the Weimar Republic , he became a private lecturer in modern history in 1962 . In 1965 and 1969/70 he was director at Friedrich Krupp GmbH in Essen .

Stoltenberg was a Protestant , married and had two children.

His grave is in the Eichhof park cemetery in Kronshagen near Kiel.

Political party

Stoltenberg had been a member of the CDU since 1947. From 1955 to 1961 he was federal chairman of the Junge Union . In 1955 he became deputy chairman, from 1971 to 1989 regional chairman of the CDU in Schleswig-Holstein . In this function, after he joined the federal government under Helmut Kohl in 1982, tensions with his successor as Prime Minister Uwe Barschel grew .

Since 1969 he was also deputy federal chairman in the CDU presidium in Germany.

MP

From 1954 to 1957 and from 1971 to 1982 he was a member of the Landtag of Schleswig-Holstein . From 1954 to 1957 he was deputy chairman of the committee on youth issues. From 1971 he represented the constituency of Eckernförde in the state parliament, in which he also had his residence.

From 1957 to 1971 and from 1983 to 1998 he was a member of the German Bundestag . From 1969 to 1971 he held the office of deputy chairman of the CDU / CSU parliamentary group .

Gerhard Stoltenberg always moved into the Bundestag as a directly elected member of the constituency of Schleswig - Eckernförde until 1969 and from 1983 as a directly elected member of the constituency of Rendsburg-Eckernförde . Until his appointment as Minister-President of Schleswig-Holstein, he also lived in Eckernförde .

Stoltenberg took part in all federal presidential elections between 1959 and 1999 . He belonged to the federal assemblies as a member elected by the Schleswig-Holstein Landtag and otherwise always in his capacity as a member of the German Bundestag.

Public offices

1965

After the federal election in 1965 , he was appointed to the office of Federal Minister for Scientific Research on October 26, 1965 by Federal Chancellor Ludwig Erhard . He kept this office during the time of the grand coalition under Chancellor Kurt Georg Kiesinger . As research minister, he is said to have been responsible for the scandal surrounding the Asse nuclear waste storage facility, which is in danger of collapsing . The mine was in poor condition when it was bought.

After the 1969 Bundestag election , he resigned from the federal government on October 21, 1969.

On May 24, 1971, he was elected Prime Minister of Schleswig-Holstein. In this capacity he was President of the Federal Council from November 1, 1977 to October 31, 1978 .

After Bonner turning Stoltenberg was on October 4, 1982 as Minister of Finance in the by Helmut Kohl led government appointed. On the occasion of a cabinet reshuffle, Stoltenberg switched to the office of Federal Minister of Defense on April 21, 1989. After a controversial delivery of arms , especially of tanks, to Turkey , Stoltenberg took over responsibility and resigned from the office of Federal Minister of Defense on March 31, 1992.

From 1996 until his death he was the first chairman of the board of trustees of the direct federal Otto von Bismarck Foundation in Friedrichsruh in the Sachsenwald .

  • 2001: Awarded an honorary citizen of Schleswig-Holstein for his political life's work and the active participation in shaping society and politics after the end of the Nazi dictatorship. The award ceremony took place on October 24, 2001.
