Barschel letter

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A forged document was known as the Barschel letter , which was allegedly addressed by the then Prime Minister of Schleswig-Holstein Uwe Barschel (1944–1987) to Gerhard Stoltenberg (1928–2001), then state chairman of the CDU . In the letter dated October 3, 1987, Barschel raised allegations against Stoltenberg, but asks him for help in dealing with the Barschel affair . By publishing the letter, Stoltenberg was burdened with complicity in the course of the affair.

In 1988 the letter was leaked to some editorial offices in the Federal Republic of Germany . In its broadcast on October 18, the television magazine Panorama reported on the letter, which was considered genuine by the Cologne linguist Raimund H. Drommel . Soon afterwards, however, doubts about the authenticity of the letter were expressed. In the following Panorama broadcast, one month later, two counter- statements were read out , one by Stoltenberg and the other by CDU General Secretary Rolf Rüdiger Reichardt .

In 1991 it turned out that the letter was a forgery from Department X of the GDR's foreign intelligence service .
