Siegmund Jaroch

Siegmund Jaroch (born November 20, 1926 in Stettin ; † January 9, 2016 in Berlin ) was a German politician ( CDU ). He was a member of the Berlin House of Representatives and from 1975 to 1991 the 12th district mayor of Berlin's Tempelhof district .

biography

Due to the turmoil of the war, Siegmund Jaroch's family moved to Berlin, where he was drafted as an air force helper.

In 1947 he put on the Eckener High School in the district of Mariendorf the High School and began a study of economics , but which he broke off. He became a candidate service in the public service and was finally as a city inspector in the Department of Youth and Sport of the district office of Tempelhof operates.

Also in 1947 Jaroch joined the Berlin CDU. In 1959, he moved to the Berlin House of Representatives, to which he belonged until 1965, for the resigned Rudolf Dümchen on the district list .

In the same year the district assembly of Berlin-Tempelhof elected him as the new district councilor for economy and finance. From 1971 he also took over the office of deputy district mayor.

In 1968 Jaroch was elected as the successor to Rudolf Dümchen as district chairman of the CDU Tempelhof.

In the Berlin elections in 1975 , the CDU won a majority in the district assembly , whereupon Jaroch was elected as the successor to Bernhard Hoffmann ( SPD ) as the new district mayor. Two years later he gave up his position as CDU district chairman to Axel Gollmer.

Jaroch ran again for the House of Representatives in the 1990 elections via the Tempelhof district list and finally moved into the state parliament in 1991. At the same time he gave up his office as district mayor. Jaroch was Berlin's longest-serving mayor at the time and also the Tempelhof district mayor with the longest term in office. He was succeeded by Wolfgang Krueger .

In the 1995 Berlin elections , Jaroch no longer stood as a candidate, resigned from the House of Representatives and ended his political career.

In March 2000, the Governing Mayor Eberhard Diepgen awarded Jaroch the title of City Elder for his services to state and local politics .

Social work

During his time as Tempelhof's district mayor, he primarily devoted himself to promoting German - American relations. When parts of Tempelhof's twin city Charleston ( North Carolina ) were devastated by a hurricane in 1989 , Jaroch made an uncomplicated donation of DM 40,000 from public funds and organized private relief efforts.

For his actions, he was awarded the highest civil order in the US Air Force , the Scroll of Appreciation , in 1992 .

Private

Siegmund Jaroch lived in the Mariendorf district. He also became known because he did not have a driver's license and did many business trips by public transport .

He died on January 9, 2016 at the age of 89 and is buried in the Mariendorf II churchyard .
