Paul de Gruyter (born September 3, 1866 in Ruhrort ; † October 14, 1939 in Bantikow ) was a German entrepreneur and local politician.

Life

Paul de Gruyter studied in Munich and was awarded a doctorate in 1893 with a dissertation “On formazyl methyl ketone and a new synthesis of triazole derivatives”. phil. PhD. He led the construction company Breest & Co., since 1896: iron building and bridge construction. His company built large buildings mainly in Berlin. De Gruyter was a friend of Paul Reusch and from 1930 a member of the supervisory board of Gutehoffnungshütte in Oberhausen .

Paul de Gruyter was the last landlord in Bantikow . On the manor Bantikow he had Erwin Albert Barth erect a grave where he was buried. The property was expropriated in 1946 as a result of the land reform . From 1975 to 1978 the training and recreation home of VEB Kraftverkehr Kyritz (Carl Hecht) was built on the site of the grave, today's hotel on the Untersee. In 1978 the remains of de Gruyter were found; they were reburied in the village cemetery.

Paul de Gruyter was the younger brother of the publisher Walter de Gruyter (1862–1923). He was married to Melanie Langerfeld. With her he had a daughter, Ilse de Gruyter. His wife died in an unexplained manner in 1945, and so did his daughter on May 1, 1945.
