Herbert Kleusberg

Herbert Kleusberg OBE (born January 20, 1914 in Berlin ; † August 5, 1997 there ) was a German doctor and Berlin politician ( SPD ).

Life

Herbert Kleusberg began an administrative apprenticeship, which he broke off in 1936 because he joined the Wehrmacht . In 1943 he passed his Abitur and began studying medicine, which he continued after he was released from military service due to an injury. In 1949 he was promoted to Dr. med. PhD and worked at various hospitals. In 1956 he became a specialist in internal medicine, in 1959 a sports doctor and in 1960 he was qualified as a medical officer . After several years as a consultant at the Berlin-Reinickendorf Health Department , he took up a position as a deputy medical officer at the Berlin-Schöneberg Health Department in 1964 and was appointed Senior Medical Officer. In 1960 he accompanied the German rowers as a team doctor at the 1960 Summer Olympics in Rome.

Kleusberg had joined the SPD after the Second World War , for which he worked from 1956 as citizens' deputy and from 1958 to 1962 as a district councilor in the district council assembly of Berlin-Spandau . In 1961 he replaced the late Paul Hertz in the Berlin House of Representatives , of which he was a member until 1967.

In 1967 Kleusberg was elected district mayor of Berlin-Spandau. He held this office until he retired in 1979. During his term of office, u. a. the construction of the underground and the renovation of the old town of Spandau . In 1976, he was the first Berliner to be awarded the Order of the British Empire for his services to the British protecting power . In 1979 he was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit, 1st Class, and in 1980 he was appointed City Elder of Berlin .

Since March 1944 Kleusberg was with the painter Ingeborg, geb. Malchert, married who died in January 1997. His grave of honor is in the mayor's field at the In den Kisseln cemetery .

Kleusberg's written estate is in the Berlin State Archives . The couple's assets went to the Dr Herbert and Ingeborg Kleusberg Foundation at the Arbeiterwohlfahrt .
