Helmut Kleebank (born November 18, 1964 in Berlin ) is a German politician ( SPD ) and since 2011 district mayor of the Berlin district of Spandau .

Life and work

Kleebank grew in the Berlin district Falkenhagener field of Spandau and acquired on the Spandau Kant Gymnasium the High School .

After his training as a nurse, he studied mathematics and physics teacher . Until 2011 Kleebank was the head of the Heinrich Böll High School in Hakenfelde . Before that, he taught at his previous school, the Kant-Gymnasium and at the Catholic School Liebfrauen . He is Roman Catholic and was a member of the parish council from 2009 to 2015 .

Kleebank is married and has five children.

Political party

Kleebank has been a member of the SPD since 1993. So far he has mainly been active in local politics. He is department chairman of the local association Gatow - Kladow for the SPD and heads the local working group on communal matters and environmental protection . He has been deputy district chairman of the SPD Spandau since April 13, 2018.

19th electoral term (2011-2016)

For the election to the Spandau District Assembly on September 18, 2011, he was the SPD's top candidate.

On October 27, 2011, the district office should be constituted. After Helmut Kleebank was unable to achieve a majority in two rounds of elections due to a stalemate , the SPD demanded an adjournment. The CDU demanded a secret vote on an adjournment. The SPD and the Greens withdrew from this vote by leaving the current meeting, which made the district parliament ( BVV ) incapable of making decisions.

On November 2, 2011, Helmut Kleebank achieved the required majority (30 yes and 24 no votes) in an extraordinary meeting of the district council meeting and was thus elected district mayor. At the same time he was also city councilor for personnel, finance and facility management in the Spandau district office.

20th electoral term (since 2016)

In the elections for the District Assembly on September 18, 2016, Helmut Kleebank was again the top candidate of the SPD. With a loss of 1.4% of the vote compared to 2011, it achieved the lowest losses of the SPD in all Berlin districts, while the CDU in Spandau lost 11.0% of votes.

On November 30, 2016, Helmut Kleebank was re-elected district mayor with the votes of the SPD, the Greens, the Left and the FDP with a majority of one vote. He received 28 yes-votes and 27 no-votes and also took over the departments of human resources, finance, school and sport.

Kleebank announced in September 2019 that it would no longer run for the office of district mayor in the regular elections in autumn 2021.
