Gatow is also described as a " village in the big city ". There are many single-family houses with gardens and a few multi-family houses.

history

Probably shortly after 1200, German settlers founded the street village Gatow. So far, no Slavic pre-settlement could be determined archaeologically . The village becomes documented in 1258 by the elevations of the Spandau monastery there . The year 1272 is considered the first documentary mention: Gatho . In the Landbuch Karls IV. (1375) Gatow / Gotow / Gothow is recorded with 50 hooves , four of which are parish hooves; four cottages lived there . A jug is mentioned in 1450 ; the cottages are desolate . A Schulze has been mentioned since 1590 , with a courtyard of six Lehnhufen, which was transformed into a manor in the 17th century . The village church (center of the village, west side of the street, with cemetery), which can be grasped in 1375 by the parish hooves , is initially the mother church, later it is often only a branch church of neighboring villages. The rulership of the village was from 1258 to 1558 at the Spandau Monastery, after its Reformation at the Spandau Office (until 1872).

Before the fall of the Berlin Wall, Gatow was part of the British Sector of West Berlin . The British occupying forces operated Gatow Airfield, built in 1935, as a military airfield . To emphasize its equivalence with the airports of Tegel ( French occupation zone ) and Tempelhof ( American occupation zone ), the British made sure that Queen Elizabeth II landed in Gatow and took off again when she visited West Berlin. On June 30, 1994 flight operations were suspended. In 1969 a golf course was laid out and The British Golf Club Gatow was founded.

Gatow village church

Main article Gatow village church

The stone core of the village church was built at the beginning of the 14th century. This makes it the oldest surviving structure in Gatow and has the status of a monument. First a field stone church was built . Over the centuries the church has been expanded again and again. The church underwent the last major restorations in 1935 (completion on December 22, 1935) and 1953. Inside, a painting on wood hangs above the altar: the "Lamentation of Christ" from around 1495, which was made by the Nuremberg painter Michael Wolgemut is assigned.

Villa Lemm

Villa Lemm, servants' house
Villa Lemm, garden

The Villa Lemm is located on Rothenbücher Weg 2-4 directly on the Havel . The property has a size of around 24,000 m². In 1907 and 1908, the shoe polish manufacturer Otto Lemm had the villa built by the Berlin architect Max Werner , and in 1913 the gardens were expanded. The villa corresponds to the style of English country houses, while the terrace garden is designed in the Italian style. From 1945 to 1990 the villa was inhabited by the British city commander , who held a big party here every year on the birthday of Queen Elizabeth II .

After German reunification , Villa Lemm became the property of the State of Berlin. At that time the garden was listed as a historical monument . The property was at times under discussion as the residence of the Federal Chancellor . The Villa Lemm was bought and renovated in 1995 by the entrepreneur and art collector Hartwig Piepenbrock . In particular, the garden was restored to its original shape. The site is not open to the public.

Bathing area

Gatow has three Havel bathing areas. The two best known are the "Large bathing meadow" near the Hohengatow location opposite the Grunewald tower and the "Small bathing meadow" near the old Gatow village center. Another smaller bathing area is located next to Villa Lemm (in the direction of Heerstraße ). The locals call this idyllic bathing area at Villa Lemm "Uferpromenade" or "Appelwiese". Gatow's youth also call it “orchard” because fruit is sometimes consumed here in the form of alcohol. In the 1970s, a DRK site trailer was set up there to provide first aid in the event of minor swimming accidents . After the fall of the Berlin Wall , Gatow lost its importance as a seaside resort for Berliners, and the DLRG withdrew from the Appelwiese. Gatow and Kladow were - before the fall of the wall - next to the Wannsee the bathing places in Berlin.

Gatow sewage fields

The sewage fields , some of which are also located in the Wilhelmstadt district , are a relic from the earlier times of sewage disposal. In the past, the wastewater from a large part of (West) Berlin seeped away into the sandy soil. Although the sludge was skimmed off, the soil is still contaminated with countless residues. The sewage fields have been out of service for many years and have developed into a heathland landscape ( landscape protection area ). The Berliner Wasserbetriebe carried out elution studies until 2010 , which examined the extent to which heavy metals are washed out of the soil and the extent to which the soil recovers. For this purpose, the treated wastewater from the Ruhleben sewage works was drained away.

Groß Glienicker See

Gatow bordered the GDR along Potsdamer Chaussee . Remaining parts of the former border fortifications in their original state are in the district of Kladow at the northern end of the Groß Glienicker See (at the end of Gutsstraße there is still a small segment of the Berlin Wall ), on which a foot and cycle path connects Groß Glienicke with Kladow and the former Border crossed.

Windmühlenberg nature reserve
