The Große Wannsee (old name: Wannensee , abbreviation: GWS ) is a bay on the Havel in Berlin . It is part of the Kladow lake route, which stretches twelve kilometers from the Spandau locality of Pichelsdorf to the Meedehorn near Potsdam - Sacrow , bounded by typical river-shaped sections of the Havel upstream (from the Spandau citadel to Pichelsdorfer Gemünd ) and the Havelenge at Sacrow downstream. The delimitation of the Großer Wannsee from the Kladower Seestrecke is an imaginary line from the Schwanenwerderbrücke (landside) in the east to the Großer Tiefehorn in the west.

location

The Großer Wannsee is located in the Wannsee district of the southwestern Berlin district of Steglitz-Zehlendorf and is at the same time namesake. The Great Wannsee (old name: Wannensee ; abbreviation: GWS) is hydrologically considered a bay of the Havel in Berlin. It is part of the Kladow lake route, which stretches twelve kilometers from the Spandau locality Pichelsdorf to the Meedehorn near Potsdam-Sacrow , bounded by typical river-shaped sections of the Havel upstream (from the Spandau citadel to Pichelsdorfer Gemünd) and the Havelenge at Sacrow downstream. The abbreviated name Wannsee always refers to the Großer Wannsee, never to the less important Kleiner Wannsee , which is the last lake in the Griebnitz Canal and joins the Großer Wannsee on the north side of the Wannsee bridge. With a length of 2.53 kilometers the Wannsee belongs as waterway class IV to the federal waterway Untere Havel waterway , for which the waterways and shipping authority Berlin is responsible.

Havel, Großer Wannsee, Griebnitzkanal , Pohlesee , Stölpchensee , Griebnitzsee and Glienicker Lake enclose the island-like Berlin district of Wannsee , which lies west of the Großer Wannsee. To the north is the island of Schwanenwerder in the Havel and about a kilometer to the west is the Pfaueninsel in the Havel .

The Wannsee lido is located on the northern section of the eastern shore and therefore not in the Wannsee district, but in the Nikolassee district . The former villa colonies Wannsee and Alsen are adjacent to the Wannsee . The street named after him, Am Großen Wannsee, is also located on the lake .

history

At the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th century, the Wannsee gained increasing importance as a destination for excursions and as a sophisticated residential address for the wealthy middle class . The villa colonies Alsen and Wannsee emerged.

Thanks to the good rail connections ( Wannseebahn , 1874, today: S-Bahn line S1), the lake also became a popular swimming area for Berlin's inner-city population, especially the Wannsee lido , which opened in 1907, and had a special status for Berliners. 1951 Conny Froboess sang :

Pack your swimming trunks, take your little sister
and then nothing like going to Wannsee.
Yes, we cycle like the wind, quickly through the Grunewald
and then we'll soon be at Wannsee

Since 1920, through the incorporation and formation of Greater Berlin, the Wannsee has been in the Berlin urban area near the city limits. At first, that didn't change the natural and sophisticated atmosphere. After the Second World War , the adjacent residential areas changed from pure villa colonies to more mixed residential areas. The Wannsee was now in the American sector and thus until 1990 in West Berlin .

Naturally, the Wannsee was of particular importance as an inner-city recreational area in West Berlin, which was walled in between 1961 and 1989 . With its elongated and listed building wing and its nudist area, it was the most popular summer weekend excursion destination for the population of West Berlin until the fall of the Berlin Wall .

As an excursion destination, the Wannsee is also important because of the passenger shipping. There are trips on the lake and along the Havel or Griebnitz Canal to Potsdam , Werder or Tegel . The landing stage is at the southern end of the lake, not far from the Wannsee bridge and the Wannsee S-Bahn station . The ferry line F10 to Kladow also docks there on the opposite bank of the Havel.

In the Villa Marlier on the west bank of the Großer Wannsee, a secret meeting of high-ranking representatives of National Socialist Reich authorities and party offices took place on January 20, 1942 , during which details of the " final solution to the Jewish question " that had already been decided upon were discussed. This meeting later became known as the " Wannsee Conference "; the villa is now a memorial and exhibition site.

Sports

On the Wannsee, a number of resident sports clubs operate the sails , for example in the club house on the Wannsee sailors , the rowing , for example in rowing club on the Wannsee or windsurfing .
