The Groß Glienicker See is a lake in Berlin and Brandenburg . It is located in the district of Kladow in the southwest of the federal capital and in the northern part of the Brandenburg state capital Potsdam in the district of Groß Glienicke .
geography
The lake extends in a north-south direction over a length of 2.0 km with a maximum width of 530 m and 240 m at the narrowest point. It is almost completely enclosed by Berlin and Potsdam settlement areas. The lake borders in the west on the Potsdam district Groß Glienicke and in the east on the district Kladow , which belongs to the Berlin district Spandau , whereby the residential area adjacent to the lake is also known under the name Groß-Glienicke. The state border between Brandenburg and Berlin runs through the entire lake . Before 1990, the border between the GDR and West Berlin ran here .
geology
Together with the Seeburger Fenn and the much deeper, 0.7 km further south, Sacrower See , it forms a chain of originally directly connected lakes, which are located in a glacial channel into which the Heilige See , located five kilometers to the south, also fits. The rift between the Groß Glienicker and the Sacrower See has dried up since 1996.
nature
The bank vegetation of the Groß Glienicker See is predominantly characterized by reed beds, old willows and black alders and is therefore close to nature. The reed beds and the open water area are the habitat of water birds such as the mute swan and the little grebe.
Hydromorphology
The Groß Glienicker See is a calcareous, stratified flatland lake with no surface runoff. It is almost completely fed by groundwater. Its water level reached its highest level on April 23, 1970 at 32.11 m above sea level; since 2013 he is one meter. sunk and is currently at an all-time low of about 30.00 m above sea level. The Groß-Glienicker See was also used to produce drinking water .
The lake at the time of the GDR until 1990
The exact border between West Berlin and the GDR ran in the middle of the lake and was marked by buoys. The GDR barriers ran directly on the western or southern shore of the lake, so that it could neither be entered nor even seen from the GDR side (Groß Glienicke lake promenade). For West Berliners, however, the lake was a popular bathing water. One could (or better: was allowed to) swim up to the buoys or, in winter, walk up to them over the ice surface. In contrast to unauthorized border crossings or attempts to flee by the own population, accidental violations by West Berliners were rarely punished by the GDR (as far as this only concerned GDR territory outside the barriers), but incidents occasionally occurred.
Tourist infrastructure
The south bank is accessible to those looking for relaxation with a swimming area, jetty, beer garden and large parking lot.
Trivia
In 1943, Friedrich August Georg of Saxony , the last Crown Prince of Saxony, had a fatal accident while bathing in the lake.
The entire lake has been managed by the Brandenburg State Anglers' Association since 2005, but the respective state fisheries laws apply on both sides. The attempt of a citizens' initiative to prevent the development of a remaining natural area on the east side of the lake by a large investor by means of a referendum by the CDU / FDP majority in the Spandau district council assembly, failed in 2008.
In the spring of 2010, a citizens' initiative “Free Shore at Groß Glienicker See” was founded in order to preserve the lakeside path. In April 2010, the Potsdam city administration removed barriers on the west bank that residents had built.
