Stephan von Dassel

Stephan von Dassel (* 1967 in Münster ) is a German politician from Alliance 90 / The Greens . He has been the district mayor of Berlin's Mitte district since October 27, 2016 .

He has been a party member since he was 17. He did his community service in Munich . Von Dassel studied political science at the Free University of Berlin from 1989 to 1994 and graduated with a diploma . He then worked as managing director of the Greens in Berlin-Mitte and as a speaker in the Berlin House of Representatives . At the same time, he was a member of the district council assembly from 1999 onwards . In 2009 he was elected to the district councilor for social affairs in Berlin-Mitte. From 2011 he also held the office of Deputy District Mayor.

In the Berlin elections on September 18, 2016 , the Greens became the strongest party in the Mitte district with 23.9% and form a counting community with the SPD . At the constituent meeting of the district assembly on October 27, von Dassel was elected as the new district mayor. He thus succeeded Christian Hanke (SPD).

Private

Stephan von Dassel grew up in Berlin and on the Swabian Alb. His mother is a nurse. He has a Greek father.

Von Dassel is a widower and has one grown daughter. In his spare time, he enjoys riding a racing bike.

In 2020, first his girlfriend fell ill with COVID-19, then he himself. On April 1, 2020, von Dassel stated in an rbb interview that he had "almost consciously" been infected with the new corona virus so that he would not have to leave his girlfriend alone in the quarantine at home. He later explained that since he had to be quarantined anyway, there was no alternative to common quarantine. He then "consciously accepted" to "quickly become infected with her in order not to have to extend the quarantine to up to four weeks in case of doubt - in the event of an infection at the end of her quarantine."
