Sören Benn (born August 8, 1968 in Kyritz ) is a German local politician ( Die Linke ) from Berlin . Since 2016 he has been the district mayor of the Pankow district of Berlin and at the same time head of the department for culture, finance and human resources in the Pankow district office .

Career

Benn trained as a construction worker with a high school diploma in Potsdam , was also initially active in this profession and was involved in the environmental and peace movement of the Evangelical Church of the GDR . In 1990 he moved to Berlin-Pankow and began studying educational sciences , which he completed with a degree in social education . In the following years he was professionally active in anti-racist youth work , in youth prisons , in integration measures for the unemployed, in work with school refusal and young migrants as well as in youth exchange work. He interrupted this activity to study acting for three years and then to work as an actor for two years .

According to his own statements, he joined the PDS in 2000 because of the Kosovo war and because of the Hartz reforms he began to become more involved in state and district politics. At the suggestion of the PDS, he was elected in 2004 as citizens' deputy in the committee of the district assembly for the Pankow job center . In the 2006 election , he finally became a full member of the Pankow district council, assessor in the BVV board, chairman of the youth welfare committee and youth policy spokesman for the left-wing parliamentary group in the BVV, and from 2008 also chairman of the left Pankow.

In 2011, Benn switched full-time into politics and was initially personal advisor to the mayor and senator for economics, technology and women Harald Wolf , from 2012 then an employee of the Bundestag member Thomas Nord and finally from 2013 advisor for economics and transport of the left-wing parliamentary group in the Berlin House of Representatives . He resigned from the district assembly with the 2011 election .

In the 2016 election he was the left's top candidate for the Pankow District Assembly and at the same time a direct candidate for the Berlin House of Representatives in the Pankow 3 constituency . In his constituency, Benn was narrowly defeated by the SPD candidate Torsten Schneider and therefore did not move into the House of Representatives. In the election for the district assembly, however, the left became the strongest force and could therefore claim the office of district mayor for itself. To this end, the left formed a counting community with the Greens and the SPD in the district council meeting , which Benn elected district mayor Pankows on October 27, 2016. In accordance with the agreement between the parties, in this role he took over the management of the Department of Culture, Finance and Human Resources.

Benn has three children and lives with his family in the Pankow district of Niederschönhausen . He is a member of the United Service Union , the People's Solidarity and the Helle Panke Association ( State Foundation of the Rosa Luxemburg Foundation ).
