Gerhard Schlegel

Gerhard Schlegel (born November 9, 1903 in Breslau ; † April 24, 1983 in Berlin ) was a German politician ( SPD ), sports official and city ​​elder of Berlin .

Life

Schlegel's parents moved from Breslau via Kassel to Berlin; his father became director of the Berlin Port and Warehouse Company (BEHALA). The son did a commercial apprenticeship at the port operations of BEHALA and worked as a travel agent. In 1919 he joined the Socialist Workers' Youth (SAJ) and from 1921 also in the SPD. From 1921 to 1933 Schlegel was chairman of the SAJ in the Tiergarten district . He was a track and field athlete and handball player at the SV Moabit workers' sports club . In 1933, he was suspected of "preparation of high treason arrested", but back out of the month detention dismissed. However, he lost his job at the port companies, so that he had to get by with unskilled labor.

Immediately after the surrender , Schlegel was appointed by the Soviet military administration as the port director of BEHALA, whose task at the beginning was primarily to get the ports of Berlin going again. He remained port director with the rank of State Secretary until his retirement in 1970.

From 1947 to 1962 Schlegel was a member of the district assembly of Berlin-Tiergarten. In 1953 he moved to the Berlin House of Representatives for only one year , since Gustav Klingelhöfer was a member of the Bundestag .

Since workers' sports clubs were not allowed to be re-established, Schlegel founded the Allgemeine Sport-Verein Berlin in 1949 and became its chairman. In 1949 he was also on the founding committee of the new state sports federation . In 1950 he was a founding member and assessor in the first presidium of the German Sports Association , where he embodied the state sports associations and the unity of West German sports including West Berlin: he held this office until 1970. He was also a member of the LSB Berlin board from 1949 and from 1956 to In 1972 he was its chairman (then honorary president). From 1951 to 1972 he was President of the Berlin Athletics Association , then as Honorary President.

From 1954 to 1973 Schlegel was a personal member of the NOK for Germany . Here he campaigned primarily for international sports traffic, especially with Israel . In 1978 he was the first German to be recognized in the Golden Book of the State of Israel for his services in the reconciliation of the German and Israeli people . In 1976 he founded the Forum for Sports History and became its chairman. He got Arnd Krüger as his managing director.

Schlegel's grave is located in the Seestrasse urn cemetery and is listed as an honorary grave for the State of Berlin .
