Gerhard Moritz Meyer

Gerhard Meyer (born January 19, 1937 in Deutsch Eylau ; † May 18, 2016 in Hamburg , known as Gerhard Moritz Meyer), was a German FDP politician and Justice Senator from Hamburg and Berlin .

Life and work

Meyer started school in Stendal in the Altmark, but passed his Abitur in 1957 in West Berlin . He then studied business administration and law in Munich and Hamburg . In 1963 he passed the legal traineeship and in 1967 the assessor examination. In 1968 he joined Mobil Oil , where he was initially in-house counsel and from 1970 head of human resources. In 1972 he switched to the aluminum industry, where he became HR manager for Europe for an international group. In 1978 he was a founding member of the Dr. Emilie Kiep Altenloh Foundation . After retiring from active politics, he settled as a lawyer in Hanover in 1981, where he was appointed managing director of the employers' associations energy and supply in 1982. Since 2000 he has been living in retirement in Hamburg. Meyer was a member of the Humanist Union .

Political party

At the beginning of his studies, Meyer joined the Liberal Student Union of Germany in 1957 . Since 1958 he was also a member of the Young Democrats , of which he was Deputy Federal Chairman from 1964 to 1966. From 1964 to 1968 he was also a member of the Presidium of the World League of Liberal Youth, of which he subsequently became honorary president.

The FDP belonged to Meyer since 1959th From 1968 to 1971 he was president of the state party congress. In 1972 he was elected to the state board of the FDP Hamburg for two years , to which he was a member from 1974 to 1977.

Meyer belonged to the Hamburg parliament from 1974 to 1978 . Until March 30, 1977 he was chairman of the FDP parliamentary group. Subsequently, his mandate was suspended because of the election to Senator.

Public offices

Already after the state election in 1974, Meyer was designated as a senator by the state executive of the FDP, he should take over the management of the building authorities. At the state party congress, which made the nominations, Meyer, who was counted on the left wing of the party, was defeated by the rather conservative Rolf Bialas by two votes . On March 30, 1977, Meyer was elected Senator by the Hamburg Parliament to succeed Ulrich Klug and was entrusted with the management of the judicial authority. After the FDP failed to pass the 5 percent hurdle in 1978, he left the Senate on June 28, 1978. After the resignation of the Berlin Justice Senator Jürgen Baumann on May 27, 1978, Meyer was elected his successor on July 6. He remained in this department even after Dietrich Stobbe's resignation in January 1981. However, a few months later in June 1981 he had to resign with the rest of the newly elected Senate of Hans-Jochen Vogel , as the social-liberal coalition did not receive a majority, but the FDP still refused to form a coalition with the CDU.
