Gerhard Friedrich Kramer (born October 9, 1904 in Berlin ; † April 21, 1973 ) was a German lawyer and politician (SPD). Prior to his political career, he was best known for his role as prosecutor in the Veit Harlan trials in 1949 and 1950.

Life

Kramer studied law and political science at the Berlin University . Kramer became engaged to the Dutch translator Rosey E. Pool (1905–1971) in 1927. They married in August 1932. In June 1935 they divorced. In 1931 he became a court assessor and public prosecutor , and in 1933 a lawyer . Among other things, Kramer defended Sally Epstein in this capacity . During the Second World War he was used as an interpreter and machine gunner in France and the Soviet Union.

From 1946 Kramer was again a public prosecutor, from 1956 a general public prosecutor in Hamburg. He represented the prosecution at the trials against Veit Harlan and gained public notoriety through sweeping pleadings. In 1958 Kramer switched to politics and became the representative of the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg at the federal government. In 1961, in addition to this function, he was appointed Hamburg Senator for Justice . After the general election in 1966, Kramer became a senator for the cultural authority (Hamburg) . In 1970 he left office.

In addition to his professional career, Kramer worked extensively as a journalist, including as a reviewer for the weekly newspaper Die Zeit and author of glosses under the pseudonym Ulpian. His 1952 memoir about the Second World War under the title We will march on caused criticism from veterans' associations because of its supposedly pacifist style . The work has been translated into several languages.
