Dieter Biallas (born June 19, 1936 in Eydtkuhnen ; † July 17, 2016 in Hamburg ) was a German mathematician and as a politician ( FDP ; from 2014 New Liberals ) from 1974 to 1978 a Hamburg Senator .

Life

Dieter Biallas grew up in Mecklenburg after fleeing East Prussia and graduated from high school in Ludwigslust in 1955 . As a teenager, he lost an eye, left hand and several fingers on his right hand in an explosion. He studied mathematics first in Potsdam and then in Hamburg . In 1965 he received his doctorate in natural sciences under Emanuel Sperner on generalized double ratios and endomorphisms of vector spaces . He then taught at the Universities of Braunschweig and Hamburg before he was appointed professor at the University of Hamburg in 1968.

Biallas had been part of the FDP since 1969 and quickly rose to the top of the Hamburg regional association . From 1974 to 1978 Biallas was a member of the Hamburg Parliament . Initially elected parliamentary group chairman, his mandate has been suspended since his election as senator. On April 30, 1974, Biallas was elected to the Senate of the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg, where he held the office of second mayor until June 28, 1978 and headed the authority for science and art . Dieter Biallas played an important role in founding the Technical University of Hamburg-Harburg through his role in Hamburg politics . At that time, he made the establishment of a technical university the subject of coalition negotiations with the SPD. From 1978 to 1986 he was a representative of the German Development Service and, from 1986, the Society for Technical Cooperation in various countries. Until 2002 he headed the German department of Transparency International .

At the end of August 2014, Biallas and the former deputy state chairman of the Hamburg FDP, Najib Karim , announced the founding of a new, social-liberal party. Biallas and Karim had left the FDP the month before. The founding of the party New Liberals - the Social Liberals took place on September 28, 2014 in Hamburg.
