Jörg Dräger (2017)

Jörg Dräger (born January 1, 1968 in Darmstadt ) is a German physicist , non-party politician and manager . From 2001 to 2008 he was Senator of the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg . Since 2008, Dräger has been a member of the Bertelsmann Stiftung Executive Board responsible for education and integration. He is considered an education expert and is the author of several books on educational policy topics, including the effects of digitization .

Life

Dräger completed his Abitur at the Christianeum in Hamburg in 1987 and then did community service . Dräger then studied physics with a minor in business administration at the University of Hamburg . After completing his intermediate diploma, he moved to Cornell University in Ithaca , New York . There, Dräger obtained a Master of Science degree in theoretical physics in 1993 and received his doctorate three years later as a Doctor of Philosophy with a thesis on mathematical crystallography . Parallel to his studies and his doctorate, he worked as a research assistant.

Dräger is married and has two children.

Career

In 1996, Dräger took up a position as a management consultant at Roland Berger in Frankfurt am Main , before returning to Hamburg in 1999 as Managing Director of the newly founded Northern Institute of Technology . The institute was one of the first public-private partnerships in the German higher education sector and is characterized by an interdisciplinary approach.

Public offices

In 2001, Dräger was appointed to the state government of the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg under Ole von Beust as an independent Senator for Science and Research . He spoke out in favor of tuition fees and more competition between the universities in order to secure their funding in the long term. The proposals met with strong criticism from students and teachers.

After the early general election in 2004 , Dräger took over the science and health departments in the Senate of Beust II . In 2006, under his responsibility, Hamburg became the fifth federal state to introduce tuition fees. Dräger's goal was a fundamental reform of the Hamburg universities, he promoted the establishment of new universities and mergers of existing universities. In retrospect, this course is considered controversial: While supporters praised its competence and determination, critics complained, among other things, of cuts in the humanities. In 2008, Dräger took last place in the "Minister-Ranking" of the German University Association , a year later it was again in sixth place.

In 2006, Dräger handed over responsibility for health to Senator Birgit Schnieber-Jastram . After the general election in 2008 , he announced that he would forego another term. Klaus von Dohnanyi , among others, regretted this decision in a comment for the Hamburger Abendblatt , because the city would lose its "probably most effective science senator since 1945". Other media, on the other hand, were relieved that the “bulldozer in three parts” ( taz ) was leaving politics.

Foundation activities

Dräger became a member of the Bertelsmann Stiftung Executive Board in 2008 . He is responsible for the areas of education and integration. In addition, he and Frank Ziegele took over the management of the non-profit Center for University Development (CHE). In both bodies, Dräger advocated the independence of universities, among other things. He called for better equipment for flashpoint schools and pushed for the educational system in rural regions to be adapted to demographic change . Dräger advocates all-day school, he regards digital media as a tool for better education.

Dräger is the deputy chairman of the board of trustees of the Advisory Council of German Foundations for Integration and Migration . He spoke out in favor of greater immigration from non-EU countries, otherwise Germany would lose the international competition for skilled workers.

Further mandates

Dräger advises young company founders in the non-profit Founders Foundation and teaches public management at the Hertie School of Governance . He has been a member of the steering committee of the Hochschulforum Digitisierung since it was founded. Dräger is also a member of the Board of Governors of the private, state-recognized Jacobs University Bremen and a member of the board of trustees of the German Wildlife Foundation .
