German University Association
The German University Association ( DHV ) is the professional and interest representation of university teachers in Germany. With 32,000 members, it is the largest interdisciplinary academic association of academics in Europe.
Overview and organization
The association is divided into local DHV groups and regional associations. It is headed by a president and a seven-person executive committee. The highest organ is the DHV Day, which takes place once a year. Each year it is devoted to a different topic that is important for the university landscape and consists of a public part (including a ceremony, gala of German science and lectures and discussions) and a non-public part, the delegates' assembly, in which, in addition to the members of the Presidium, two Delegates from each DHV group and the chairmen of the regional associations have voting rights. The president and the six vice-presidents are elected for a two-year term; re-elections are possible. The DHV-Tag can also give orders to the Presidium and the President; they are bound by the resolutions of the DHV day.
The work in the association is voluntary at all levels and is supported by the office located in Bonn- Bad Godesberg (Rheinallee 18/20). Bernhard Kempen , Professor of Public Law and International Law at the University of Cologne, has been President since 2004 . Before that, Hartmut Schiedermair , his doctoral supervisor and habilitation supervisor and predecessor of his Cologne professorship, was President of the DHV from 1980 to 2004; since 2004 he has been honorary president of the DHV.
The association finances its work through the contributions of the members (every university professor at a university, scientific college or art and music college in Germany). Likewise, every German university professor at a corresponding university abroad can join the German University Association. Any junior professor, post-doctoral candidate or junior research group leader can also become a member. Technical college professors who have their own professional representation with the university teachers' association can use the services of the association through a service contract.

The formal dissolution took place on July 7, 1936 by ministerial decree.
After reunification , further regional associations were founded in the five new federal states.
