Ulrich Schollwöck (born March 10, 1967 in Munich ) is a German theoretical solid-state physicist and lecturer at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich .

Life

Schollwöck attended the Humboldt Gymnasium in Vaterstetten . After studying physics at the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität (LMU) Munich as a scholarship holder of the Maximilianeum Foundation (Diploma 1993) and at Balliol College , Oxford University (Master of Science 1991), Ulrich Schollwöck received his doctorate in 1995 as an employee of the Service de Physique Theorique Saclay des Commissariat à l'énergie atomique (CEA) at the University of Paris XI (Paris-Sud, Orsay). After stints in Munich ( Habilitation 1999), Wuppertal and at the Max Planck Institute for Solid State Research in Stuttgart, he became Professor of Theoretical Physics at LMU Munich in 2003, and in 2004 professor at RWTH Aachen University , before returning to LMU Munich in 2009 (Chair for Theoretical nanophysics). In the 2009/10 academic year he was a fellow at the Wissenschaftskolleg zu Berlin .

In his research, Schollwöck focuses primarily on the application and development of the density matrix - renormalization group apart, a numerical method for simulating low-dimensional strongly correlated quantum systems. During the methodological development in 1999 and 2004 he made important contributions to the extension of the method to the dynamics of classical, then quantum mechanical systems. After initially dealing primarily with the investigation of quantum spin chains (one-dimensional magnets), since 2004 his main interest has been the dynamics in strongly interacting ultracold atomic gases in optical lattices and the connection between the simulation of many-body systems and quantum information theory .

Prizes and awards

Others

From 2000 to 2005 he was a founding member of the Junge Akademie at the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences and Humanities and at the German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina . Since 2007 he has been a member of the North Rhine-Westphalian Academy of Sciences in Düsseldorf.

Ulrich Schollwöck has also been active in science policy, in particular as spokesman for the Junge Akademie in 2002 and 2003 and since 2008 as Vice President of the German University Association , with a focus on the opportunities for young academics.

Publications

Ulrich Schollwöck has published around 100 publications in scientific journals, in addition to original papers and a review article on the density matrix normalization group. There are also numerous publications on questions of science policy.
