life and work

From 1957 to 1969 Rehlinger was a ministerial official in the Federal Ministry for All-German Issues in the Federal Republic of Germany (under Minister Rainer Barzel , responsible, among other things, for "political issues" and security officer) and from 1982 to 1988 State Secretary in the Federal Ministry for domestic German relations .

As President from July 1969 to March 1972 he headed the All-German Institute . Rehlinger was an opponent of the new course in Ostpolitik introduced by the SPD / FDP coalition after the 1969 Bundestag election. At the end of 1971, when the Union, due to some converts from the FDP and SPD factions, figured out chances of being able to appoint the Federal Chancellor by means of a constructive vote of no confidence , Rehlinger took leave of absence as President of the All-German Institute and joined the CDU as Barzel's campaign manager / CSU parliamentary group . His successor at the All-German Institute was Detlef Kühn .

From 1988 to 1989 he served briefly as Berlin Senator for Justice in the Diepgen II Senate .

Rehlinger played a key role on the German side in negotiations about the release of prisoners from the GDR.

From 2005 to 2007 Rehlinger was chairman of the board of the German Society , an association "to promote political, cultural and social relations in Europe". He has been its honorary chairman since 2007.
