The German Society e. V. is a registered non-partisan civic association to promote political, cultural and social relationships in Germany and Europe.

history

In 1983 the later founding members around Peter Brandt tried to initiate a German-German friendship society. The attempt failed because of the ideological fears of the SED officials . That changed in autumn 1989 at the time of the Monday demonstrations . Within a few months, representatives of the opposition groups and many public figures in the GDR were won over to the idea. In December 1989 the joint statute was drawn up. The Board of Trustees was constituted on January 12, 1990. The founding members were the lawyer Jürgen Graalfs , Jürgen Tietze ( Neues Forum ), Willy Brandt , Günter de Bruyn , Lothar de Maizière , Armin Mueller-Stahl , Heiner Müller , Johannes Rau , Jens Reich , Bärbel Bohley , Rainer Eppelmann , Andreas H. Apelt , Elmar Pieroth and Martin Walser . At the founding act in Berlin's Nikolaikirche the next day, u. a. Konrad Weiß , Helga Schubert and Eberhard Diepgen .

A few weeks later the first German-German youth exchange took place . In the summer of 1990, two thousand young people were placed with host families in the other part of Germany. The focus of political education work soon also included seminars and conferences on the introduction of economic and monetary union and the effects of the Unification Treaty . As early as January 1990, discussions were held about what contributions could be made to saving cultural assets in the new federal states .

activities

The office is located in the Mosse-Palais on Potsdamer Platz in Berlin . With over 700 events annually, the Deutsche Gesellschaft e. V. to the most active non-partisan actors in the field of political education. It is active nationwide and in more than 20 European countries. In cooperation with federal and state ministries , the federal or state centers for political education , the European Commission or with foundations and associations , v. a. Workshops, lectures, seminars, conferences, interviews with contemporary witnesses and study trips carried out. The Deutsche Gesellschaft e.V. participates with scientific and popular scientific publications. V. in important social debates. Study trips and exchange programs are mainly organized by the Bildungswerk Sachsen der Deutschen Gesellschaft e. V. organizes.

"If your association didn't already exist, it would have to be invented today." With these words, Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier thanked the Deutsche Gesellschaft e. V. on January 14, 2020 at a festive event to mark the 30th anniversary of the association.

Friends of Palaces and Gardens

Under the umbrella of the Deutsche Gesellschaft e. V., the Friends of Palaces and Gardens have formed, so far for Brandenburg , Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and Saxony-Anhalt . Her program includes lecture evenings and excursions and series of the same name with over 180 titles, also about Neumark and Pomerania .

Since 2005 the Deutsche Gesellschaft e. V. annually on November 9th the prize for services to German and European understanding .

Memberships

The German Society e. V. is a member of the European Movement Network and a cooperation partner of the Association of History Teachers . The association is represented in the Rheinsberg Art and Culture Association, in the Board of Trustees of the GDR Museum Pforzheim and in the Against Forgetting for Democracy association.

Honors

With the German National Prize on June 17, 2008, the German National Foundation honored the company's longstanding commitment to the construction of a freedom and unity monument to commemorate the Peaceful Revolution and German reunification .

On November 7, 2019, the Deutsche Gesellschaft e. V. received the European Cultural Brand Award 2019 in the category European Education Program of the Year 2019. The association received the award for its project “Heritage, Tradition, Modernity: European Culture and Knowledge Transfer by Traveling Journeyman”.
