Friedrich-Wilhelm Schorlemmer (born May 16, 1944 in Wittenberge ) is a German Protestant theologian and civil rights activist . He was a prominent protagonist of the opposition in the GDR and is still politically active.

Life

Schorlemmer was born as the son of a pastor in Wittenberge (Prignitz) and grew up in Werben (Altmark). Because of his origins, he was denied access to the extended secondary school . Instead, he obtained his Abitur at an adult education center and then studied theology from 1962 to 1967 at the Martin Luther University in Halle-Wittenberg . From 1971 to 1978 he was a student pastor in Merseburg , from 1978 to 1992 he taught as a lecturer at the Evangelical Preacher's Seminary and was a preacher at the castle church in Lutherstadt Wittenberg . From 1992 to 2007 Schorlemmer was director of studies at the Evangelical Academy of Saxony-Anhalt .

In 1968 Schorlemmer took part in actions against the new constitution of the GDR and the suppression of the Prague Spring by Warsaw Pact troops . From the 1970s onwards he was a member of the peace , human rights and environmental movements .

On the Church Congress 1983 in Wittenberg was on the Lutherhof the symbolic under his responsibility Umschmiedung a sword into a plowshare in the presence of Richard von Weizsacker instead. The GDR authorities had previously declared the public use of the slogan swords for plowshares illegal. This action made him known internationally and became a sign of hope for the peace movement in the GDR . Stefan Nau, the blacksmith , had to leave the GDR a short time later.

Schorlemmer participated in synods of the Protestant Church in the GDR. In 1988/1989 he was an advisor to the Ecumenical Assembly for Justice, Peace and the Integrity of Creation in the GDR .

Friedrich Schorlemmer was one of the first to sign the appeal “ For our country ” on November 26, 1989.

He was a co-founder of the Democratic Awakening Party (DA). When the DA met at the party congress on 16./17. December 1989 politically reoriented and turned away from leftist ideas, Schorlemmer resigned from the party with other leftists. He switched to the Social Democratic Party in the GDR (SDP) .

After their union with the SPD on September 26, 1990, Schorlemmer was parliamentary group leader of the SPD in the Wittenberg city parliament until 1994.

He was one of the opponents of the war in Afghanistan from 2001 and the Iraq war in 2003.
Schorlemmer is co-editor of the monthly newspaper Blätter for German and international politics and was previously co-editor of the weekly newspaper der Freitag .

Schorlemmer is a member of the German UNESCO Commission , a member of the PEN Center Germany and a member of the advisory board of the Association Against Forgetting - For Democracy . His political priorities are less about coming to terms with the past and more about pointing out the dangers of globalization . He spoke out against the exclusion of the PDS from the political discourse and signed the Erfurt Declaration in 1997 , which called for a broad alliance of left parties and organizations and insists on Article 14 (2) of the Basic Law , according to which property must also serve the common good.

Schorlemmer has been a member of the globalization-critical Attac network since March 2009 . In 2009 he called the Alexanderplatz demonstration on November 4, 1989 a " Liberation Day ". In 2010 Schorlemmer was one of the founding members of the Solidarity Modern Institute .

Friedrich Schorlemmer lives in Lutherstadt Wittenberg . Andreas Schorlemmer, pastor in Groß Kiesow near Greifswald and police and emergency chaplain in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania , who died on July 4, 2019 , was his younger brother.
