Humboldt Society
The Humboldt Society for Science, Art and Education is a scientific society that is committed to the universal point of view and the creative research spirit of the brothers Wilhelm and Alexander von Humboldt .
history
The Humboldt Society was founded by 24 people on May 12, 1962 with its headquarters in Mannheim . The initiator and co-founder was the lawyer Herbert Kessler . It promotes science as a whole, i.e. natural and human sciences, as well as art, and through its activities it contributes significantly to promoting education on the basis of humanism . The Association of Old Corps Students and the Weinheim Association of Old Corps Students are corporate members of the Humboldt Society.
aims
The goals of the society are realized through scientific conferences and lectures as well as publications and scientific excursions. The Humboldt Society also supports research projects in independent collaboration and deals with pressing issues of our time in position papers. Through her work she contributes to the discourse on current cultural-political issues.
activities
Scientific conferences take place twice a year, at which lectures, discussions, poet or author readings and musical performances provide essential content. Members are also offered scientific excursions and visits to special cultural, geographic and historical sights. The Humboldt Library brings together publications on the life and work of the von Humboldt brothers. It is available to all members, but also to the public.
management
The Presidium consists of 5 to 7 members. In addition to the President, Vice-Presidents and the Treasurer, the "Academic Council" is represented by its head. This is an important body in society. Its task is to advise the Presidium in the fulfillment of its tasks. In particular, it makes proposals for the content of the Humboldt Society's meetings, which take place twice a year. He also prepares position papers for the Humboldt Society on socially relevant problems. The treatises of the Humboldt Society are entrusted to his professional care. The Academic Council submits proposals to the Presidium for closer contact with other institutions and grammar schools that bear the name of the Humboldt brothers. The activities of the Academic Council are directed by its coordinator. Currently (February 2020) this is Ulrich Schmidt-Denter . Outstanding personalities are appointed as members of the Academic Council.
