Gudrun Höhl

Gudrun Höhl (born January 21, 1918 in Marktbreit ; † August 30, 2009 in Mannheim ) was a German geographer . Gudrun Höhl was one of the first female professors in post-war Germany.

Career

Höhl studied geography , history and German at the colleges and universities of Bayreuth , Göttingen and Prague at the time . Gudrun Höhl completed her studies with a PhD. phil. with an urban geography work at the University of Prague in 1942. After the Second World War she was a lecturer at the Universities of Bamberg , Erlangen and Saarbrücken . In 1959 Höhl completed his habilitation with a thesis on the urban geography of Franconia at the University of Erlangen.

In 1965 Höhl received a call to the chair for physical geography and regional geography at the Geographical Institute of the Mannheim Business School, which shortly thereafter was promoted to university . Höhl was the first woman in Germany to be offered a chair in geography. For many years she was the only full professor of geography in Germany.

With Gudrun Höhl studied a. a. Wilfried Schweinfurth and Ingrid Dörrer , with whom she promoted the establishment of the Geographical Institute at the University of Mannheim. Gudrun Höhl was also the chairwoman of the Mannheim Natural History Association for a long time and, until recently, President of the Humboldt Society for Science, Art and Education in Mannheim.

Gudrun Höhl's successor to the chair for physical geography and regional geography at the Geographical Institute of the University of Mannheim was Peter Frankenberg , who later became Minister of Science in Baden-Württemberg. He held the office from 1988 until he switched to politics in 2001. The Institute of Geography was closed in 2003.

Höhl's scientific papers are now in the Geography Archive of the Leibniz Institute for Regional Geography .

Honors

Höhl received the Federal Cross of Merit 1st Class for her services to science . In 2007 she became honorary president of the Humboldt Society Mannheim and honorary member of the German Association of Women Academics (DAB). The community of Auleben made her an honorary citizen in 2008 .
