Peter Frankenberg (born June 29, 1947 in Honnef ) is a German geographer and politician ( CDU ). He was rector of the University of Mannheim and from 2001 to 2011 Minister for Science, Research and Art of the State of Baden-Württemberg .

Life and work

He graduated from high school in Bad Honnef in 1967. He then studied history, geography and geology at the University of Bonn from 1968 to 1972 and then botany until 1976. He received his doctorate and was then a research assistant at the Geographical Institute of the University of Bonn.

He completed his habilitation in 1982 at the University of Bonn. He then taught at the University of Eichstätt , and from 1986 at the University of Mannheim. A new climate classification proposed by Wilhelm Lauer and Frankenberg in 1988 achieved notoriety outside of academic geography .

Frankenberg was also rector of the University of Mannheim from October 1994 to 2001 and as such was involved in various inter-university committees on questions of university development. He became a member of the advisory board of the Center for University Development and representative of the State of Baden-Württemberg for the international Andrássy University of Budapest .

He was also the deputy chairman of the board of directors of the “Zukunft Metropolregion Rhein-Neckar ” association, the supervisory board of the Gips-Schüle foundation and the board of trustees of the Schader foundation . In 2011 he became chairman of the Heinrich Vetter Foundation and the Museum Association for Technology and Work . He is deputy chairman of the Association of Friends of the University of Mannheim and a member of the board of trustees of the Association of Private Universities (VPH).

Frankenberg has been a partner since 2013 and is now chairman of the shareholders' meeting of the Dieter Schwarz Foundation . He is said to have appointed Reinhold Geilsdörfer as the new managing director of the Dieter Schwarz Foundation while he was still president of the Baden-Württemberg Cooperative State University .

Frankenberg is married and has three children.

Peter Frankenberg is a member of the CDU. From 2005 to 2007 he was chairman of the Mannheim district association.

From 2001 to 2011, Frankenberg was a member of the state government of Baden-Württemberg as Minister for Science, Research and Art . He was a member of the Teufel IV , Oettinger I , Oettinger II and Mappus cabinets . During his time, tuition fees were introduced, the University of Karlsruhe (TH) merged with the Helmholtz Research Center to form the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology and the vocational academies in the state were transferred to the Baden-Württemberg Cooperative State University .
