Hans Sachsse

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Hans Sachsse (born December 29, 1906 in Elberfeld , † March 31, 1992 in Wiesbaden ) was a German chemist and technology philosopher.

Career

Sachsse studied in Tübingen , Bonn and Berlin , where he received his doctorate in 1929. He received his PhD with a thesis on the characterization of proteins by electrochemical affinity determinations , which was published in 1931. From 1928 to 1933 he worked, with a one-year break, at the Kaiser Wilhelm Institute for Physical Chemistry and Electrochemistry in Berlin-Dahlem, headed by Fritz Haber . He later went to Göttingen to work with the physical chemist Arnold Eucken . There he completed his habilitation with a thesis on the thermal decay of ethane . He worked in the chemical industry for 25 years, from 1935 to 1949 at BASF , then from 1949 to 1957 in a managerial position at the Waldhof pulp company and finally from 1957 to 1960 at Farbwerke Hoechst AG . Since 1960 he has taught physical chemistry and technical chemistry at the University of Mainz .

Sachsse invented and developed a petrochemical process for the production of acetylene by incomplete combustion of hydrocarbons with oxygen. In the 1970s and 1980s, he wrote influential books on cybernetics and the importance of technology for culture. Technology is an umzu-Weg in the sense of an organic addition to the achievement of goals: we make what we perceive clearer than it is so that we can decide what to do; we perceive the repetitive, the constant and can orient ourselves in this way; we perceive what is rapidly changing, which may indicate danger.
