Friedrich Franz von Unruh

Friedrich Franz von Unruh (born April 16, 1893 in Berlin ; † May 16, 1986 in Merzhausen ) was a German writer. He was the brother of the writer Fritz von Unruh and the painter Kurt von Unruh .

Life

Friedrich Franz von Unruh is one of the most important novelists in German-language literature of the 20th century. Born in Berlin in 1893, grew up in Königsberg in East Prussia , influenced by his training at the cadet institute in Berlin-Lichterfelde , he began military training after graduating from high school, became an officer and - most recently as a royal Prussian captain - company commander in the 1st body of Baden. Grenadier Regiment No. 109 in Karlsruhe. In the First World War was seriously wounded by Unruh, was active in the Weimar Republic as a journalist, including a variety of articles for the Frankfurter Zeitung and the Neue Rundschau , and as a writer.

In 1931 he became known to a broader public through his series of articles National-Sozialismus , an extremely critical analysis of the National Socialist movement , in the Frankfurter Zeitung, which was widely acclaimed - also abroad . In the Nazi state , however, von Unruh was approaching National Socialism; in the Federal Republic, however, the poet turned decisively into the right-wing conservative camp and moved closer to positions of the right-wing extremist milieu v. a. since the sixties - a development that found its ideological expression in numerous writings. In 1986 the 93-year-old poet, valued as a novelist, died in Merzhausen near Freiburg im Breisgau, where he had lived for around fifty years.

Honors

In 1973 Unruh awarded the Humboldt plaque as a gift of honor . In 1975 he was awarded the Great Cross of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany.
