Rainer Rilling (born October 14, 1945 in Stetten ) is a Senior Research Fellow at the Institute for Social Analysis of the Rosa Luxemburg Foundation and an adjunct professor of sociology at the Philipps University of Marburg .

Life

Rilling studied political science , sociology and modern history at the University of Marburg from 1966 to 1973 .

In 1973 he did his doctorate at the University of Bremen under Lothar Peter with a thesis on arms research and arms policy. 1974–1980 he worked as a research assistant and lecturer in the social sciences department at the University of Marburg, where he qualified as a professor in 1980 in sociology. After two years of unemployment, residency as a European Visiting Scholar of the International Studies Association at the F. Byrnes Center at the University of South Carolina in Columbia (USA). Until 1999 he worked as a lecturer in Münster and Marburg and completed several study and research stays in the USA and England. In 2002 he was appointed adjunct professor for sociology at the University of Marburg.

1983–1998 he worked as managing director of the Federation of Democratic Scientists (BdWi). From 1999–2011 he was initially head of the research and information department of the Rosa Luxemburg Foundation (Berlin), then a member of the “Science and Politics” project group and scientific advisor or deputy director in the area of ​​policy analysis at the RLS (since November 2008: Institute for social analysis of the RLS).

Research priorities

After Rilling initially dealt with the analysis of neo-fascism (NPD) and state socialist societies in the tradition of the Marburg School in the field of political sociology, his work subsequently focused on the sociology of science, peace research and the political sociology of communication, especially the Internets. In the last decade he has concentrated on the political economy of property (commons, the public) and contemporary capitalism, on international relations (with a focus on the USA and the debate about the “Empire” and geopolitics ) and questions about the development of the political left in Federal Republic.
