Karen Schönwälder (* 1959 in Berlin ) is a German political scientist .

Karen Schönwälder grew up in Cairo . She studied in Marburg and received her doctorate there in 1990. In 2001 she completed her habilitation at the Justus Liebig University in Gießen with a thesis on English and German integration policy from the 1950s to the 1970s. After visiting professorships in Haifa and a substitute for a C4 professorship in Freiburg im Breisgau , she headed the intercultural conflicts and social integration department at the Berlin Science Center for Social Research from 2003 to 2007 . Since June 2008 she has worked at the Max Planck Institute for Research on Multi-Religious and Multi-Ethnic Societies , Göttingen. Schönwälder has been co-editor of the papers for German and international politics since the beginning of 1998 .
