The Max Planck Institute for Research on Multi-Religious and Multi-Ethnic Societies in Göttingen is a research facility of the Max Planck Society . It was founded in 2007 and replaced the Max Planck Institute for History (MPIG) founded in 1956 .

During the initial phase, the British social anthropologist Steven Vertovec was the institute's first director. The institute now consists of three independent departments (as of 2016):

The institute is dedicated to questions of diversity in the age of globalization.

The institute's library is divided into an in-house collection based on the Regensburg composite classification and a part taken over from the Max Planck Institute for History, which is housed in the historical building of the Göttingen State and University Library .
