The Max Planck Institute for Research on Multi-Religious and Multi-Ethnic Societies in Göttingen is a research facility of the Max Planck Society . It was founded in 2007 and replaced the Max Planck Institute for History (MPIG) founded in 1956 .
During the initial phase, the British social anthropologist Steven Vertovec was the institute's first director. The institute now consists of three independent departments (as of 2016):
- Religious Diversity Department headed by Peter van der Veer
- Socio-Cultural Diversity Department headed by Steven Vertovec
- Department of Ethics, Law and Politics headed by Ayelet Shachar
The institute is dedicated to questions of diversity in the age of globalization.
The institute's library is divided into an in-house collection based on the Regensburg composite classification and a part taken over from the Max Planck Institute for History, which is housed in the historical building of the Göttingen State and University Library .
