Steven Vertovec

Steven Vertovec (born July 2, 1957 in Chicago ) is an American sociologist , ethnologist and religious scholar . He is the founding director of the Max Planck Institute for Research on Multi-Religious and Multi-Ethnic Societies . In 2007 he coined the social science term superdiversity .

Life

Vertovec received his bachelor's degree from the University of Colorado at Boulder in 1979 and his master's degree from the University of California at Santa Barbara in 1982 . He then studied social anthropology at the University of Oxford , where he received his doctorate in 1988 . He was then Professor of Transnational Anthropology at Oxford and from 2002 to 2007 Director of the Center on Migration, Policy and Society (COMPAS) at the Economic and Social Research Council of the British Government. Since November 2007 he has been the founding director of the Max Planck Institute for Research on Multi-Religious and Multi-Ethnic Societies in Göttingen and honorary professor of sociology and ethnology at the University of Göttingen . From 2008 to 2011 he was a member of the Expert Council of German Foundations for Integration and Migration . Vertovec has been an honorary doctorate from the University of Liège since 2018 .

Coined by him in a 2007 Journal article concept Super diversity used Vertovec to underline a level of complexity and a complexity type of migration, which goes beyond all that many of the recipient countries have ever experienced before.
