Peace Springer
Friede Springer born Riewerts (born August 15, 1942 in Oldsum on the island of Föhr ) is a German publisher .
Life
Fering , a dialect of the North Frisian language , was spoken in Springer's parents' house . She belongs to the Independent Evangelical Lutheran Church . The daughter of a master gardener and a housekeeping manager had broken off an apprenticeship as a hotel clerk before she found employment as a nanny in the house of the publisher Axel Springer in Hamburg-Blankenese from 1965 . In 1978 she became Springer's fifth wife.
Entrepreneurial activity
After Springer's death in 1985, she inherited Springer's shares in the publishing house Axel Springer together with the children and grandchildren from Springer's previous marriages . At that time, the publisher still owned 26.1 percent, the remainder was held by the Bavarian film dealer Leo Kirch , the Burda family and various small shareholders.
Under her leadership, the Springer heirs bought back the Burda brothers' stake in 1988 for around DM 531 million. They had paid half of the share five years earlier. After Springer's children and grandchildren rebelled, she paid off the family members and thus took over their shares. In 2002 Friede Springer appointed Mathias Döpfner as the new CEO. He led the Springer Group out of the crisis and out of its close ties with the Munich entrepreneur Leo Kirch.
Friede Springer owns (as of 2012) 5% of the shares in Axel Springer SE , but above all 90% of the company shares in Axel Springer Gesellschaft für Publizistik GmbH & Co., which in turn holds 47.3% of the shares in Axel Springer SE . She acts as the deputy chairwoman of the supervisory board of the second largest German media group after Bertelsmann SE & Co. KGaA .
According to Forbes Magazine , she had an estimated private fortune of the equivalent of 2.5 billion US dollars in 2010, making her the 29th richest person in Germany .
Friede Springer is also chairwoman of the board of the non-profit Axel Springer Foundation as well as founder and board member of the Friede Springer Foundation and the Friede Springer Heart Foundation .
politics
Springer maintains good contacts with Chancellor Angela Merkel . For the CDU - as a member of the 12th , 13th , 14th , 15th and 16th Federal Assemblies - she took part in the election of the Federal President in 2004, 2009, 2010, 2012 and 2017 . The seven-member Kuratorium of the Friede Springer Foundation includes Horst Köhler , former Federal President. D., also Joachim Sauer , husband of Angela Merkel.
Awards
In 1988 Friede Springer was awarded the Order of Merit of the State of Berlin , in 1996 the Great Cross of Merit and in 2004 the Bavarian Order of Merit . In 2008 she was honored with the large Federal Cross of Merit with a star.
In 2000 she received the Leo Baeck Prize as the highest award from the Central Council of Jews in Germany . On May 13, 2002, she received an honorary doctorate from the Ben Gurion University of the Negev in Be'er Scheva, Israel, and in 2003 the Prize for Understanding and Tolerance of the Jewish Museum Berlin . In 2012 Springer was honored with the Moses Mendelssohn Medal by the Moses Mendelssohn Center for European-Jewish Studies . On September 15, 2014, she accepted the Theodor Herzl Prize of the World Jewish Congress on behalf of her late husband Axel Springer in the Jewish Museum in Berlin .
In 2009 she was awarded the Hermann Ehlers Foundation Prize. In 2012 she received the medal for services to foundations from the Federal Association of German Foundations . Also in 2012 she was awarded the Leibniz Medal of the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences awarded in 2015 she was awarded the Konrad Adenauer Foundation to award social market economy .
On November 9, 2017 she received the German Society Award . V. for services to German and European understanding .
The Hebrew University of Jerusalem awarded her an honorary doctorate in 2019 for her commitment to Israel .
On October 8, 2019, Springer was awarded the Order of Merit of the State of Saxony-Anhalt for her social and cultural commitment .
On 24 August 2020 it was announced that Springer with the Freedom Award of the Friedrich Naumann Foundation is excellent.
