engagement

Triggered by the IS committed Jesidenverfolgung Düzen Tekkal even Yezidi German, the association HAWAR.help founded. She wanted to draw attention to the genocidal actions of the IS and the human rights violations that her religious community has to suffer in Iraq and Syria . In the meantime, an organization has grown out of this that strengthens human rights in the crisis regions, but also in Germany - and is particularly committed to the rights of girls. Düzen Tekkal's diverse commitment follows a canon of values that are based on human rights and aim to strengthen the open society and democratic culture. In the integration debate, Düzen Tekkal takes a position that is based on humanism and realism - no one should be discriminated against on the basis of their origin, gender or religion. At the same time, however, society also has the right to demand that all people living in Germany respect free and democratic values.

Tekkal traveled to the crisis area several times at risk of death and documented the genocide committed against the Yazidis and the inhuman suffering that women and girls of the Yazidi faith had to endure: They were sold, enslaved and raped. With her work, Düzen Tekkal draws attention to the fate of women.

To date, over 3,000 Yazidi women have been held captive or are missing. Düzen Tekkal captured the events in the documentary "HAWAR - My Journey into Genocide". Düzen Tekkal tries to give women a new perspective on life with projects like “Back to Life”. In the refugee camps of the autonomous region of Kurdistan , women in Iraq are given the opportunity to build a new life for themselves through special sewing and literacy courses , for example .

The first "Back to Life" Empowerment Center was opened in September 2018 and currently offers around 840 places. For Düzen Tekkal, a special focus is on building intercultural bridges, which is why she relies on Christian , Yezidi and Muslim teaching staff.

HAWAR.help is supported by the Federal Ministry for Development and Cooperation (BMZ) and the Society for International Cooperation (GiZ) , with the responsible Minister Gerd Müller in particular proving to be one of the first supporters. In 2017, a specialist conference on the subject of sexual violence as a weapon of war in crisis areas took place, which was organized in cooperation with the United Nations - among the guests was Chancellor Angela Merkel .

In the HAWAR.help project “Scoring Girls”, girls of different origins can exchange ideas during soccer training. The project is led by Tuğba Tekkal , sister of Düzen Tekkal and former professional soccer player. In addition, the girls' families find support when dealing with authorities and with questions about everyday life in Germany. The project builds a bridge between cultures and ways of life and serves to break down prejudices. Together with her sisters Tuğba Tekkal and Tuna Tekkal from HAWAR.help, Düzen Tekkal won the CIVIS Media Prize 2019 for integration and cultural diversity for the “Scoring Girls” project .

Düzen Tekkal has ensured that the genocide of the Yazidis is discussed in schools across Germany through so-called “school talks”. The educational project, which is now supported by “ Engagement Global - Service for Development Initiatives ”, the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ ) and the Robert Bosch Foundation , sensitizes pupils and teachers to the topic of human rights.

In addition to the “Scoring Girls” project from HAWAR.help, Düzen Tekkal campaigns for an open culture of debate on these topics in workshops and panel discussions, an argument from which her book Germany is threatened: Why we have to defend our values results, in which, among other things, the powerful narratives of migrants in Germany are analyzed.

With the “#GermanDream” debate, Düzen Tekkal not only started a discussion about the success stories of people with a migration background in Germany, but also transformed the debate into an educational initiative she founded that inspires young people for democratic values . The educational initiative, which is recognized as a non-profit making, conveys the values of the Basic Law and the possibilities and chances of the free-democratic basic order to the younger generation in particular . In addition, so-called value ambassadors - including celebrities like Katja Riemann and Sara Nuru , but also politicians like Christian Lindner , Lars Klingbeil , Cem Özdemir and Dorothee Bär  - visit around 1,000 schools throughout Germany.

Düzen Tekkal is an honorary board member of the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung e. V. and is primarily committed to tolerance, human rights and democracy. For her social commitment she was awarded the “Ramer Award for Courage in the Defense of Democracy 2017” from the American Jewish Committee and the “ Human Rights Award 2018” from the Ingrid zu Solms Foundation. In addition, she received the “Rebellious Women Prize 2018” from the Foundation for rebellious women for reporting on the genocide of the Yazidis - and the European Movement awarded her the title “ Woman of Europe 2018”.
