The new "Mosse-Palais"

The Mosse-Palais at Leipziger Platz No. 15 in the Berlin district of Mitte is an office building that was completed in 1998. The name goes back to the city residence that was built at the same location in 1885: the Mosse-Palais of the same name , which was destroyed in an air raid in 1945 .

Building description

Between 1945 and 1989 Leipziger Platz was in the slipstream of the border between East and West Berlin and remained undeveloped. The office building with the name "Mosse-Palais" was the first new building on Leipziger Platz after reunification in 1998 . The office building now forms the northern boundary of the square. Its floor plan is H-shaped with street fronts facing Leipziger Strasse and Vossstrasse. The building consists of three parts: the 35-meter-high main building facing Leipziger Platz, the 22-meter-high building facing Vossstrasse and a connecting crossbar.

For a long time, the building was considered to be the largest “black building” in Berlin, as the investor had four floors built on the crossbar without a building permit . The planned first occupation of the building in 1998 by the opening of the American Jewish Committee (AJC) therefore threatened to fail. Ultimately, there was a compromise between the owner and the building management: The unauthorized high crossbar could remain, while the rear building on Vossstrasse had to be partially dismantled by demolishing the floors completed in the shell.

The building has eleven floors, several elevators, two entrances and shops on the ground floor. The floors are used as commercial space or offices. The facade is clad in stone and has large windows. In the entrance area on Leipziger Platz, round columns support a protruding part of the house.

In 2017 and 2018, the lower three levels of the floor were significantly rebuilt. In order to accommodate large retail stores with the required ceiling height, the ceilings on the ground floor and first floor were completely removed and replaced with a new false ceiling, and the inner courtyards in this area were built over so that the building now has one floor less. The front of the building facing Leipziger Platz has also been redesigned.
