Herbert Helmrich

Herbert Helmrich (born January 1, 1934 in Luckau ; † October 24, 2017 in Buchholz in the Nordheide ) was a German lawyer and politician ( CDU ).

Life and work

Helmrich was born in Lausitz and initially lived in the GDR. After he was arrested for political reasons in 1952 and 1953, he fled to the Federal Republic of Germany in 1954.

After graduating from high school in Göttingen, Helmrich began studying law, economics and sociology at the Georg-August University of Göttingen , which he completed in 1963 with the first state examination and in 1967 with the second state examination. He was admitted to the bar in 1967, then worked in a law firm in Buchholz in the Nordheide near Hamburg and had also been admitted as a notary since 1969 . In 1982 he founded the Society for Efficiency in State and Administration (GFE). He died after a serious illness at the age of 83 in his hometown Buchholz and was buried in the forest cemetery there. He left behind his wife Waltraud, two sons, a daughter from his first marriage and five grandchildren.

Political party

Helmrich was a member of the CDU from 1966 until his death. He became a member of the Federal Working Group of Christian Democratic Lawyers (BACDJ) and was its chairman from 1992 to 2001. He was also involved in the medium-sized and business association of the CDU / CSU (MIT). In 2002 he became chairman of the CDU commission for administrative reform in the state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania .

Helmrich was elected to the German Bundestag in 1976 , where he was a member of the Legal Affairs Committee and its chairman from 1984 to 1992. In parliament he initially represented the Harburg - Soltau constituency and later the Harburg constituency . After his appointment as Justice Minister of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, he resigned from the Bundestag on May 21, 1992.

From 1994 to 2002 he was a member of the state parliament of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania . There he also headed the Legal Committee from 1994 to 1998.

Public offices

On March 19, 1992, Helmrich was appointed Minister for Justice, Federal and European Affairs in the government of the state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania led by Prime Minister Berndt Seite . After Lothar Kupfer's resignation , he also took over the provisional management of the Ministry of the Interior from February 11 to 18, 1993. After the formation of a coalition of CDU and SPD , he left the government on December 8, 1994.
