Berndt Page (born April 22, 1940 in Hahnswalde , Trebnitz district ) is a German veterinarian and politician ( CDU ). From 1992 to 1998 he was Prime Minister of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania .

Life

Berndt Seite was born in Hahnswalde near Trebnitz in Lower Silesia . At the end of the war he fled with his family to the Elbe, where his father worked as a farmer in the following years. He attended elementary school in Ihleburg from 1946 to 1954 and then the Pforte state school in Schulpforte, where he graduated from high school in 1958. He then started studying veterinary medicine at the Humboldt University in Berlin , which he completed in November 1963.

He gained his first professional experience as a compulsory assistant in a veterinary practice and at a slaughterhouse. Due to the shortage of veterinarians in the GDR , he was released from military service, so that in 1964 he started working as a practical veterinarian in Walow , which he carried out until 1990. With the dissertation on claw care in the districts of Röbel and Neustrelitz as well as the critical evaluation , which he presented together with his wife at the Faculty of Biosciences at Berlin University, he was awarded a Dr. med. vet. PhD . From 1975 to 1993 he was a synodal member of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Mecklenburg . During the peaceful revolution in 1989 he co-founded the New Forum in Röbel / Müritz and became its spokesman. Together with like-minded people he founded the Association of Veterinarians in the GDR (VdT) in December 1989, which he chaired from 1989 to 1990. In the local elections in 1990 he became the first freely elected district administrator in the Röbel / Müritz district. From 1991 to March 1992 he was Secretary General of the CDU of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. He was then elected Prime Minister of the state. He held the office until autumn 1998. From 1994 to 2002 was a member of the state parliament of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania.

Page has been a writer since retiring from state politics.

Berndt Seite has been with the veterinarian Annemarie Seite , born in 1964 . Brandt, married and has two grown children. His wife was a member of the state parliament in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania from 1992 to 1994.

politics

In 1989, Seite turned to local politics and was spokesman for the New Forum in the Röbel district . The following year he left the New Forum and joined the CDU in February 1990. From June 1990 to December 1991 he was district administrator in the district of Röbel, from October 1991 to March 1992 Secretary General of the state association of the CDU Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania .

After the resignation of Alfred Gomolka as Prime Minister, forced by the CDU parliamentary group by a vote of no confidence , Seite was elected as his successor on March 19, 1992 and continued the black-yellow coalition ( Cabinet Seite I ). At the same time he took over Gomolka's office as President of the Federal Council , which he held regularly until October 31, 1992.

In the first year of his tenure there were riots in Rostock-Lichtenhagen . Since then, his government has often been attested to having at least accepted this pogrom. As a consequence, Seite demanded a supplement to the asylum law , as it was already demanded by federal politicians of the CDU and implemented a year later by means of an amendment to the Basic Law. This was intended to drastically reduce the influx of asylum seekers.

In the 1994 state elections , which took place parallel to the federal elections , the CDU was able to maintain its position (37.7%, −0.5 percentage points), while the SPD rose slightly (29.5%, + 2.5 percentage points). Since the FDP left the state parliament (3.8%) and otherwise only the PDS was represented in the state parliament, a grand coalition ( cabinet side II ) was formed, which side presided over as prime minister. In the state election he won a direct mandate in constituency 20 (Müritz I).

In the state elections in 1998 , which again took place parallel to the federal elections , the CDU suffered severe losses (30.2%, −7.5 percentage points), while the SPD under Harald Ringstorff became the strongest force (34.3%) and together with the PDS formed the first red-red coalition nationwide.

On election night, Seite announced that he would withdraw from the office of prime minister. On November 3, 1998, Harald Ringstorff was elected to replace Seites. In the previous state elections, he had once again reached parliament via the state list of the CDU Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, to which he was a member until the end of the 2002 legislative period. On June 22, 1999, Federal President Herzog Seite awarded the Grand Cross of Merit with a Star.
