Andreas Schmidt (born November 4, 1956 in Mülheim an der Ruhr ) is a German politician ( CDU ). He has been chairman of the G10 commission since 2013 . From 1990 to 2009 Schmidt was a member of the German Bundestag (MdB), from 2002 to 2009 chairman of the Bundestag legal committee .

Life and work

After graduating from high school in 1976 at Broich grammar school in Mülheim an der Ruhr, Schmidt completed a law degree at the Ruhr University in Bochum , which he completed in 1982 with the first state examination in law. After his legal clerkship , he passed the second state examination in 1985 and has since been admitted to the bar. From 1982 to 1985 Schmidt was assistant to the MEP Otmar Franz .

Andreas Schmidt is married and has a daughter.

Political party

He has been a member of the CDU since 1974. Here he was initially involved with the Junge Union , whose state board in North Rhine-Westphalia he was a member from 1986 to 1991. Since 1989 he has been chairman of the CDU district association in Mülheim an der Ruhr.

MP

Schmidt was Member of the Bundestag from 1990 to 2009. From 1994 to 1998 he was parliamentary managing director and from 1998 to 2002 legal advisor of the CDU / CSU parliamentary group . From 2000 he was also chairman of the CDU / CSU in the committee of inquiry into the CDU donation affair. From November 2002 to October 2009 he was Chairman of the Legal Committee. In the 2009 elections he could no longer obtain a mandate. Andreas Schmidt was always drawn into parliament via the state list of North Rhine-Westphalia .

Member of the G 10 commission

At the beginning of the 18th electoral term in 2013, Schmidt was appointed chairman of the G10 commission, which is active in the course of the application of the law on the restriction of the secrecy of letters, post and telecommunications . He is also chairman of the commission in the 19th electoral term.
