The municipal high school Broich in Mülheim an der Ruhr is named after the Mülheim district of Broich .

General

The grammar school is located west of the Ruhr and is attended by 907 students who are taught by 66 teachers (as of September 2014). School operations began at the current location on May 10, 1968. At that time it was the first school in North Rhine-Westphalia to offer co-educational teaching.

Bilingual branch

The municipal grammar school Broich offers a bilingual branch in English.

In one to two bilingual classes, the fifth and sixth grade students learn the English language more intensively . From the seventh to the ninth grade, the subjects geography and history are taught in English, whereby the learning content does not differ from that of the other classes.

With the beginning of secondary level 2, the bilingual branch can be continued or even ended. In grade 11, the bilingual advanced English course is compulsory for all participants in the bilingual branch. In addition, the Abitur examination in the history or geography basic course - either in writing or orally - must be taken in English. After successful completion, the students receive a certification of the bilingual school career.

Culture at Broich High School

Every year at the municipal grammar school Broich there is a chamber music evening in spring, a summer concert before the summer holidays with pieces from various musical styles, as well as a Christmas concert. The schoolchildren organize the evenings in the auditorium either as soloists, in small groups, as a class or as a music course.

Other events:

  • 2005: first rock & pop festival; School bands and former students played pieces by well-known performers from a wide variety of musical styles.
  • 2006: Classical Class; In cooperation with the Duisburg Philharmonic, the Broich grammar school, in cooperation with the Broich secondary school, held a classical concert for young people, in which even some students could play themselves.
  • 2014: first open band evening for school and teacher bands
  • 2015: 50-year school anniversary with various events (including cult day in the Lichtburg Essen, school festival)

There are also annual performances by an inter-school theater group.

Competitions

In 2000, high school students took first place in the computer science Olympiad in China and received a special prize in the national computer science competition.

New building

In June 2012, the construction of a building with 30 classrooms began, which is primarily used for the lower school and contains a cafeteria. The building was inaugurated after the Easter break in 2014 and replaced the old classroom complex, which, unlike the complex of specialist rooms, was not renovated.

In the summer of 2014, the community elementary school on Saarnberg temporarily moved into the vacant building, which is not due to be demolished until summer 2015 . The move became necessary due to extensive renovations of the fire protection equipment in the school building, which dates from 1996.
